Prayer for the Lord

Prayer for the Lord

A Poem by adornoscousin
"

New poem, written 8/28/20

"
Silence and cigarette butts accumulate
in the landfill of the jaw
toothaches complete the cycle
back to Eden
I thought we were better than this
I should have known

Vocal cords snap
like guitar strings
Aspirin and ibuprofen cannot numb the universe
maybe only dull a star
whose light reaches me
even though its dead
and I wait to take
the Eucharist of ice and methane
at the end
of the solar system

Deliver me
Deliver me from evil
Deliver me from today

What a prayer and how many of us are completely with you when it comes to the words in your final stanza. I have never known such unsettled and troublesome times. Good and relevant for today.

This is a brilliant collection of decaying artifacts from a life of wasting away. It's brilliant how you liken this to the eucharist, so punchy, so irreverent. The final verse is slamming with meaning. Most of us want to be delivered from today, I would venture to guess (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I may be wrong, but if there has ever been a better opening line, then I've never read it. I'm still trying to figure out how it works with both silence and cigarette butts, but wouldn't make sense with just one of them.
I like how the protagonist is an observer, in between man and god, viewing the carnage like you know on day one of class that us and the planet will be getting an F minus and most likely expelled... Detention at least.
Your writing is always so bold, stark and vivid (in the best way of course) and always reminds me of why most of my favourite authors are of the dystopian genre, because perfection is impossible when there is so many looking for flaws.
We, observe and see the world for what it is, whatever that is 😀
