Cutting Potatoes
What if I slice a hole in the universe's skin?
Puncture the epidermis
Like latex?
Reach in and touch its skeleton?
What if see the the thing in itself
I wouldn't be able to tell anyone
Nor would anyone care

But someone might try to sell it

I never got to reach in to the universe from peeling a potato so I'm a bit jealous:/ but once when mashing a potato I discovered the key to string theory but I added to much milk and it was lost forever (as it should be...yuck!) I doubt anyone would be interested in the unifying of string theory either! you cant make this stuff up! oh wait, yes you can LOL here's to the power of the potato dear Adorno:) oh by the way this was very clever

Amazing imagery the touches on both human nature and the nature of the universe. "I wouldn't be able to tell anyone" struck home to me. I once saw a thing so beautiful that I cannot speak of it, the bones of the universe would have to be so epic did I couldn't put it into words. Maybe that's what I saw and you captured it for me in a poem. Thank you.

its funny ... i am instantly in a concrete scene ... slicing a potato .. and just as instantly reaching outward to poke a hole in the universe .. but the rest of the story points inward .. how beautiful the thought that all of the all ... or universe ... may be found in either direction ;) love this thought provoking poem .. most assuredly Kant was your invited guest ... i especially like how easily his thougts on time and space and be married to Einstein's ... at least in me own noodle .. great stuff here .. meditations to take with me today ...i honestly was kind of bummed that things got reduced to human greed and avarice :(((((( but it certainly accentuates the punch

Intriguing write. Imagine that, an opportunity to grab hold of something special that no one cares about until a price tag is put on it, assigning it a perceived value. Reminds me of The Lorax. The best things in life are free, they aren't meant for sale.

I'm even hearing of companies selling bottles of air. Now that is a real skill.
I suppose in theory the whole world is up for sale.

Kind of like selling bottled water!
I think there are those who think anything can be bought and sold...including hearts, souls and of course, potatoes.
This reminds me of Plath's poem "the onion"
"my thumb instead of the onion, a million redcoats pour out to" or something to that effect.

love that idea of reaching in and touching its skeleton.

YEs! I was inspired by that poem. Nice pick up!
I get the feeling there's already a big hole in the universe's skin (excellent thought-provoking imagery thru-out your poem). As I read this, I'm thinking how, when we slice into a potato, we know what's in there, but today's world feels like slicing into some unknown blob & being very wary about what might come squirting or sloshing out upon us. Your final dig reminds me of how the stock market is buoying right now becuz people are making big money off this pandemic & you can easily see that by checking out the prices for everyday items on Amazon -- doubled & tripled! Great ending snark (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Us poets need to be the conscience of this world even if it hates us
An intriguing poem. I don't know much about Kant, other than he was a German philosopher, but what I do know about human nature is, that if there is an opportunity for a buck to be made, someone will make it.

That seems all too prevalent lately...as Margie notes above, look at the stock market
