Abstract

CATIA is multiplatform software used for mechanical design engineering which incorporates with Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE). State of the art, computer aided three dimensional interactive application has developed into much more than CAD (Computer Aided Design) software.

It is first developed by Dassault Systems in 1977 to develop their Mirage fighter jet. Later on it was adopted by the aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, and other industries. Dassault Systems is an European software development company that develops 3D design, 3D digital Mock-up, and Product Development Lifecycle (PLM) Software. Up till now Dassault system has launched six versions of CATIA.

Scope in Various Areas of Application

As Computer Aided Three dimensional Interactive Application supports multiple stages of product development such as conceptualization, CAD, CAE, CAM it is having great scope in various mechanical design engineering fields with different domains. It greases the wheels collaborative engineering across disciplines around its 3D platform, including surfacing & shape design, electrical, fluid and electronic systems & mechanical designing.

Mechanical design engineering

With the help of CATIA we can obtain 3D parts from 2D sketches, sheetmentals, and composites, molded forged or tooling parts up to the definition of mechanical assemblies. This software contributes advanced technologies for mechanical surfacing and BIW. The tools to complete product definition with functional tolerances as well as kinematics are also served by computer aided three dimensional interactive application.

Design

CATIA endeavors a perfect answer to shape mechanical design engineering and styling, surfacing workflow and visualization to build, modify and validate complex innovative shapes from industrial design to class A sufacing with the ICEM surfacing technologies. CATIA is involved into various stages of product design.

Systems engineering

CATIA provides an open and expandable systems engineering development platform that fully integrates the cross discipline, simulation, verification and business process support needed for developing complex ‘cyber-physical’ products.

Electrical systems

Version 5 of computer aided three dimensional interactive applications gives best solution to formulate the design and manufacturing. In electrical systems capabilities include requirements capture, electrical schematic definition, interactive 3D routing of both wire harness and industrial cable solutions.

Fluid systems

Mechanical Design engineering and manufacturing of routed systems including turbines, piping, Heating, Ventilating & Air conditioning (HAVC) systems are been designed by computer aided three dimensional interactive applications.

Industries

The major use of CATIA is in industrial applications from aerospace to shipbuilding and process power and petroleum, and services lets discuss its industrial applications with examples category wise

Aerospace

CATIA V3 is used by the Boeing Company to develop their 777 airliner and V5 is been used for 787 series aircrafts. Likewise India, China, European countries, Canada, America are also using the versions of Computer Aided Three dimensional Interactive Application for developing Aerospace application.

Automotive

Automotive companies are the one where computer aided three dimensional interactive applications is heart of their industry they design and manufacture the car structures. Because of computer reorientation of surfaces many foreign countries design door beams, IP supports, bumper beams, roof rails, side rails, body components etc. it is having a huge scope in mechanical design engineering.

Shipbuilding

Many Companies have started shipbuilding services with computer aided three dimensional interactive applications version 5 releases 8, which includes special features useful to shipbuilders.

Industrial equipment

Industrial equipments are designed and manufactured with the help of CATIA specially the companies where machineries are manufactured.

High tech

In high tech industry Computer Aided Three dimensional Interactive Application is been used to develop and design products. Nokia, Nikon, Petatron are some of the companies who are using it.

Energy, process and utilities

In energy and manufacture processing computer aided three dimensional interactive systems is used to design and manufacture blades of turbines. Suzlon uses it to manufacture turbine blades & Gamesa design and manufactures wind turbines.

Consumer packaged goods (CPG) and retail

Many companies have started using computer aided three dimensional interactive application to optimize its packaging goods.
