Broken

Broken

A Story by adichie
"

A work of fiction

"
Past the African doorway of no return sailing the middle passage.

Eyes obedienced. Lips and teeth shoplifted, fat fingers checking sturdiness
(filth blistering hymens and tongues of women).

Voices cuffed.

Backs fractured.

Feet abducted.

Parcels of human land, wreckage trampled by all. Shadowed hearts broken
in the New World.

This is the story of the "New World" not told, or not told from this perspective. Boyds Mills once said, when asked what makes good poetry, "Brevity, terseness, spareness, viewing something new for the very first time, creating an image like no one has ever been blown away by before in their entire life." I'd say that is this poem. Challenge met and exceeded.
