SedationA Poem by Adam ParkerA poem about the abuse of drugs and alcohol in order to deal with pain and mental health illness in the 21st centuryWe are a nation of the young on a search to be numb our canisters crack , balloons inflate with a hearty laugh Our eyes roll back, "just let go man, it'll be fun " our escape from self is both bottled and on draught both self aware and self depleated, nothing to be won. We sit in a room with four walls pressed harsh alleviation on the mind , an escape from dark thoughts our legs stuck in the mud, head peering over the marsh misunderstood, we wish peace could be bought. However, the self needs alleviation when words compress In a system that compares and contrasts Each individual wallows in their sadness with a hope that blissfullness would last. We live in the united state of comparison with a view of homogeny They can't handle it when there is s sense of ambiguity. Our alleviation is brought upon by the bottle and smoke I see freedom as a wall without a mirror, no capitalism or agenda with calculated error then maybe the system wouldn't be broke I choke, on the broken pieces of lives I see a homeless man pull a bottle from his sheet do you blame him, if he hasn't eaten for a week when will we realise, or empathise With those whose lives are taught with tension The need for sedation is an epidemic, is it too much to even mention © 2017 Adam Parker |
