The Unfortunate Events Between Classes

A Chapter by Aretha Brooks
"

After an enjoyable first period spent with Nate, things kind of begin to spiral down.

"

After Kayla changed out of her cloth, she suddenly remembered her promise to Chris. Quickly stuffing her clothes into the locker, she rushed out of her aisle. Looking past people she attempted to find Scarlet, or Leera. However she liked to be called, Kayla didn’t really care.

Finally she found the redhead in a corner, cursing under her breath while trying to close her backpack.

“Leera,” Kayla’s voice came out hesitant as she approached Scar.

“Yes,” she heard a snap, and Leera didn’t even bother to face her.

“I talked to Chris before class and he asked me to tell you he has a meagle or something like that,” Kayla shrugged as she relayed Chris’s demand. She wouldn’t even try to figure out what that phrase was supposed mean. Most likely he was just pranking her or his sister.

“What?” Scar howled, turning around so fast that Kayla took a step back. Apparently it wasn’t a joke, or if it was Leera was taking it very poorly.

“I’m just saying what he told me,” Kayla said, her voice attempting to find equal footing with the girl who had shown no kindness to her.

“Well, he is mighty crazy. How does he get into all this trouble anyways?” Scar was no longer looking at Kayla. Kayla waited for her to say something else, but no other explanation ensued. Instead, Scar grabbed her bag, and stormed away. Kayla remained frozen for a moment, as her brain tried to make sense of all this.

“Cat, right?” Sarah asked Kayla, coming up in front of the still frozen girl. Kayla’s eyes snapped to the speaker, but not before they travelled from expensive high heels, to personally tailored jeans and then a blouse that was open a little bit too much, and finally landing on an angel formed face, with freshly glossed lips and perfectly shadowed eyes.

“It’s Kayla,” Kayla corrected the girl standing before her. She hated how perfectly Sarah looked, because it proved her fears right - she wouldn’t be able to compete with this queen of the school.

“Whatever,” Sarah waved her hand, “It’s not like I actually care enough.”

“If you don’t, then why are you here?” Kayla asked, hating the girl more by the moment.

“You think being this new cute girl, you’re allowed to take my boyfriend away from me? Well think again. Nick is mine and if you try anything I will bury you alive, literally,” Sarah growled into Kayla’s face.

“I don’t need your Nick,” Kayla vehemently responded, “He is most likely as vile as you’re. So you can keep him!” Sarah took another step closer, but even with those heels she wasn’t able to tower over Kayla, who refused to back down from her stance.

“Good, make sure you keep your hands to yourself then, Kitty,” Sarah answered.

“It’s Kayla,” Kayla angrily replied, but Sarah just smirked.

“And remind me why I care?” Sarah asked, twirling a blond locke with her finger. Just the sight of her, annoyed every cell in Kayla’s body. She understood that if she didn’t leave right now, she will start a catfight and over who? Over a Nick she hadn’t even met yet. Deciding that there was nothing she could say to Sarah, Kayla shouldered her way past the queen bee of this school and then threw open the door. As she stepped out of the locker room the door forcefully shut behind her.

“Someone’s mad,” Nate whistled, coming to Kayla.

“Well no thanks to your girlfriend, Nick,” Kayla snapped, “Go calm her down or she will actually explode.”

“Actually why don’t I calm you down, you look like you’re about to explode,” after seeing the death glare being directed at him, Nate raised his hands, “Fine, fine, bad joke, I’m sorry.”

“It wasn’t a joke at all,” Kayla retorted, walking past the boy. She opened the door out of the gym and stepped into the hallway.

“Do you even know where you’re going?” Nate yelled behind her.

“Away from you,” Kayla threw over her shoulder.

“This school could be confusing, how about I help you,” Nate offered. For some reason, though, Kayla had no desire to see him right now. Not his beautiful face, not his dark green eyes, which weren’t actually his authentic colors anyways.

“No,” Kayla jibed at him, and practically ran from the gym. She regretted this decision a few seconds later when she realized that she had completely no idea where she was going or how she was going to get to biology class. She wildly began searching the rushing student body, begin Chris to be in coming this way.

“Hey, new girl,” a familiar voice called out. She turned around, happy to see Chris.

“Hey, Chris,” she said, “Thank god, I met you, I honestly have no idea where I’m going.”

“Well, that’s easy to fix. What class do you have now?” Chris asked, coming up to her with a smile on his face. Kayla weirdly noticed that he didn’t have his back pack, but she didn’t question it.

“Biology AP. It says here room 23,” Kayla said, showing Chris her schedule.

“Oh, let’s go, I will show you where it is. How did you get here anyways? The science wing is the other way from the gym,” Chris asked her. Kayla practically slapped her forehead, because the disappointment she was feeling was huge enough to engulf her fully.

“I was being illogical,” Kayla muttered.

“Someone got under your fur?” Chris asked.

“My fur?” Kayla asked.

“Your hair,” Chris clarified, “Nate, maybe?”

“What, Nate? No,” Kayla said, confused for a moment, “His twin brother. I haven’t even met the guy and he is already ruining my life.”

“Nick has that ability,” Chris chuckled, “Consider yourself lucky that Nate decided to go to gym class in Nick’s place today. With Nick I’m pretty sure your first gym class wouldn’t have been as enjoyable.”

“Well,” Kayla suddenly became aware of Chris’s knowledge, “How do you know that Nate and Nick switched?”

“You told me,” Chris quickly responded.

“I did no such thing,” Kayla contradicted.

“Well, Leera must have mentioned something,” Chris mumbled under his breath. He wasn’t really good at lying though.

“Yeah right, and where is your backpack?” Kayla asked, getting suspicious.

“Already in class,” Chris answered.

“And why were you in the hallway then?” Kayla followed through these weird coincidences. Either she was going crazy, or there was something going on in this school that people seemed to know yet, not know at the same time.

“I was getting a drink, gee. Are you always suspicious of everything?” Chris asked her, in a tone that sounded hurt.

“No, I’m sorry. I think it’s just the change of school districts. I’m not really good with anything new or unknown,” Kayla averted her gaze from Chris, focusing on where they were going. She was partially embarrassed for asking all these questions someone who wanted to help her.

“It’s alright,” Chris’s voice softened, “This school can be… stressful.”

“That’s very true,” Kayla agreed.

“Well, here we are. Your bio class,” Chris said, motioning at a door to the next hour of her class.

“What class…” Kayla turned to Chris only to find that he had once again disappeared into the crowd, “Damn that kid.”

With a small prayer to anyone, who had enough time to listen to a girl like her, Kayla stepped into the classroom. Time seemed to slow down as she took in Nate basically lying on his the chair in the back of the classroom with his head leaning against the wall and his eyes closed. She almost cursed, before she realized something.

The person in the back of the classroom wasn’t Nate. Either the twins were continuing with their rouse, or they have gone back to their normal schedules. Which one was true, Kayla didn’t know. But she knew with certainty that the person she was currently looking at wasn’t the same person she had spent the past hour with.

He had the same beautiful eyebrows, the same full lips, the same cheekbones and the same delectable olive skin, but although she wasn’t able to see his eyes, the atmosphere around him seemed spiked with something bad. He had a regal way around him, which Kayla was able to see even as he was pretending to sleep. She wasn’t sure what made this difference so stark to her, but as she looked at Nick he seemed so different from Nate that she wondered how anyone could ever confuse the two.

Nate was like a ray of sunshine, smiling and joking, always attempting to fool around. While, Nick, even when he wasn’t doing anything had a depressing way to him. He was definitely not a person that she would want to sit next to, or further on spend a whole school year in the same gym class, arguably the most interactive class in school.

Suddenly, as if sensing her unfavorable thoughts Nick’s eyes flew open. Light blue eyes focused on her and a gasp almost escaped Kayla. The spell broke, as time returned to normal pace and Kayla rushed to a seat in the front of the class. She sat down quickly, but not before she saw Nick smirk, the lightness of his eyes standing out from his dark persona.
