Stranger By The Beach

Stranger By The Beach

A Poem by Abon Hassan

The more I talk, the more I see reason in silence, people are beautiful and profound on their own, in their promises they seek, in their words they thrive, but in conversation I leave the reminiscent of my soul with them, to explore, to see;

I seek connection, even when it doesn’t seem to be possible, though in their company, all resolves itself, finding in them the oblique in my personality, the acute sense of loneliness dies, I and them together in one time shorter than the other.

Today I’ve talked with a naked woman, for she undressed to me, she said she came from adversity. Had four kids one younger than the other, still with braces in their dying teeth. Skinny dark skin, burnt by the sun, still pale by its lack of appetite, used to the long days at the beach;

Not just the bones in her neck, not just the short curly hair, she had extraordinary looks. I see her and listen to her stories, full of color, full of light and dark palettes of unsustained humor, pain and laughter. She was happy and so was I, to meet her, to meet someone, to be there at that instant.

The kids sat in the sand watching the sunset whilst she sold beer and made the drinks, I took a cigarette already drunken by the sun, sandy body and tired breath that exhaled off my chest in slow motion;

As I said goodbye I felt the relief of the silence, the implacable pain to see one more soul lost in my collection of immediate friends, not to see her ever again, not to see those yellowing decadent teeth and that personality that stepped by the border, that walked into the shore, sea and beyond, without fear of getting stained or yet meeting another stranger.

We are creatures in need of community. Whether we encourage introduction or not we are innately social. It doesn't take much to peak our curiosity or satisfy those urges to be known. Whether in fleeting gesture or long conversation. Interactions help us maintain a bit of sanity that we exist in this world and are seen in it. There is much wisdom i your poem Abon.
