A Nap in the Storm

A Nap in the Storm

A Story by OceanMist

I woke up like any other working  day, slowly got up and rolled out of bed.  I looked around the room which contained a small black desk in the corner, a light brown wooden dresser with a mirror, and a small closet in the corner filled with clothes.  I got up and walked to the closet and got changed into a pair of jeans and a blue T-shirt.  Then I left my room and made my way to the kitchen to find my mom standing by the counter pouring herself bowl of cereal.  “Hey, mom how are you doing” I asked as I  made my way to the cupboard to get a granola bar.

“I am okay, how about you” My mom says before she takes a bite of her cereal.

“I am good well I should get going if I don’t want to be late” I say glancing at the clock realizing that it was already eight thirty.

“Alright, have a good day at work my mom says smiling before going back to eating her cereal.

before going out the door and through the garage and outside.  When I opened the door I walked outside were I was met by a gentle summer breeze.  After I got down my driveway I turned on to the next dirt road that was surrounded by trees that were swaying gently back and forth while their green leaves were rustling lightly in the wind.  I continued walking down the street til I got to the end of the street were I turned on to a concrete road That was surrounded by trees though in the distance I could see the outline of the buildings in town so I picked up my pace.  As I reached the edge of town the smell of cinnamon filled the air as I walked passed the bakery.  I continued walking down the street passing a store every here or there till I reached a white Building that had a large window with displays of clothes and other random things and a sign that read The Grand Summer House the place where I work.  I spent the next seven hours doing what I normally do on a day of work which includes waiting on customers, folding, and putting prices on clothes.

My shift ended at four thirty.  When I got off of work the sky was completely covered with dark grey clouds.  The wind picked up as I made my way home.  Causing the trees to swing violently back and forth.  By the time I got to the corner of the paved asphalt road rain had started to pour down from the dark clouds.  Realizing that it was only going to get worst, deciding to take cover. I turned and ententered the vast forest.  I continued walking into the forest until I made it to a giant oak tree that was large enough to keep me dry.  So I went over to wait out the storm.   The storm seemed to continue for hours as I sat leaning up against the oak tree.

I slowly opened for them to be met with the sun shining brightly through the leaves.  Eventually I got up and started to head out of the forest.  When I got to the edge of the forest I realized that I was standing in front of a paved road filled with a steady flow of traffic, and houses lined up all the way down the road.  Confused I made my way down the road to the place that my house had once been, but I was astonished when I looked in front of me when I saw a giant apartment building that was three stories tall, with people walking in and out.  I entered the tall building and went to the front desk.

“Can I help you with anything” the girl behind the desk asked.

“Yeah can you explain what happened to the family that used to live here” I asked moving my hair out of my face.

“Yeah, sure they sold their house and moved about three years after their daughter’s disappearance.” the girl from the desk said as she looked up from her computer screen to see me and looks at me in confusion I decide to ignore it.

“Okay, thank you” I leave the counter and head out when I get out of the large building  I look around look around me to see tall skyscrapers in the direction of town.  I am really surprised I did not notice them before.  I walked down the road that was once familiar to me though now I can’t seem to recognize anything.  I kept going down the road until I got to a sign that read Green Burrows Park.  I look straight ahead and see the forest that I had woken up in.  How long could it have been what did I miss in all this time.  I decided to continue down the road.  When I got to the next corner I am greeted by a cheerful women who seemed kind of familiar.

“Hello, I am Juniper if you don’t mind me asking what were you doing by the apartments earlier” She asks .

“I am Krystal I was seeing what happened to the people that lived there. I said and I saw her eyes flicker with some kind of realization.

“Krystal As in Krystal Harding I thought I recognized you we were classmates.”she said.  I realize that she is indeed my former classmate so that justs leaves me to wonder exactly how long I was asleep. “where have you been you went missing without a trace like twenty years ago”.

“Twenty years” I shouted. “I had no idea that it was that long I just laid down to take a nap and woke up today.”

“Yeah all your family moved away to who knows where so I guess you are on your own.” She said.  Suddenly it really hits me I may never see my parents again.  I started to think about all the times I took for granted and started to regret them cause my time with my parents had been cut short.
