Cat Sleep

For some must watch, while some must sleep So runs the world away

                                       William Shakespeare

My cat starts out as a Gordian knot all roped in
           bundled of round & bound
then sleep infuses her parts
with a sojourners liquidity
& with small protractions
little by little she sprawls out
from a cat planet into a galaxy then her own solar system
arms & legs expanded fully into their own orbits
ears twitching
legs twitching
is she flying with bird wings
is she fighting a dragon
she revolves around the thick totem of her dreams

where is she
for hours she milks slumbers sweet fluid
stretching from time zone to time zone
no distractions
no limitations
sometimes lying so still
death would be confused

I, observant in watchful eye
see the conviction & dedication
it takes to truly sleep like that of the dead
envy seeps deeply into every pour
why can’t I do that -- why am I denied the luxury of
                Hypnos’  distraction & tender mercies
why can’t I have cat sleep…
