Life as a Leaf

Life as a Leaf

A Poem by Andrea A. Wentz
"

What is it like to be a leaf?

"

To dance and wave

above your head so high

To whisper and sigh

as the wind blows by

To warm in the sunlight

and turn yellow in my time

To fade to red

then to brown

To crack and become brittle

as I fall to the ground

To dance in the wind

and move far from home

To be carried above

where birds do roam

To spin and twirl

colors a blur

To land once more

and lay their waiting

To feel the rake pull me

and dump me in a pile

To be pressed and suffocated

by the others like me

To feel the first wisps of

winter’s snow

To be smothered beneath

it’s terrible cold

To melt into my others

and turn to mush

To be put into the ground

as next years compost

To begin the cycle again

as Spring’s first leaves

To have lived a life

a life as a leaf
