Worth

Worth

A Story by Ashleigh Goodwin

What determines what your worth? Is it how many tests you ace or if you can throw a football better than the next guy? Is it how fast you can run a 5k or if you can make a computer program that arranges your schedule? Your worth is not your past mistakes, It does not come from your hairstyle or how much your shoes cost. Is your worth how many people text you or how many Friday nights you go out? That’s what we’ve been told, but your worth is far from these things. Your worth is how hard you try when the world holds you back, it Is in the compassion you feel for a friend and your family. Your worth is your soul and what you do with the ability for good you have in you. And even if you lie in bed at 2am on a Friday night, or you’re out on the town with your crew, your worth will not change. You are worth what you make yourself, how you feel, and the actions you take, but no one will ever be worth more than another. We are all one in the same, different souls in different bodies with different talents but we are all so special. You can offer the world a million things that the person sitting next to you in chemistry class can’t, but they can offer the world a million things that you can’t. We’re here for a purpose, our goals are the same and our methods are so different. Occasionally you will feel worthless, I’m not going to lie and tell you that you’ll feel like a crisp new dollar bill every day when you wake. Some days you’ll roll out of bed and feel like a grungy penny, virtually worthless, and unwanted, but you can shine yourself up and be the best penny you can be that day, or you can allow yourself to stay on the floor with the pocket lint and crumbs from yesterday's dinner. It is what you do with what you have that determines your worth.
