Clearly, memories can haunt us; when thinking back upon emotional experiences from the past.

Particularly, a person or place associated with growing up in life. In the final verse, I like how you day "you are part of me now; as if your fondness makes you feel at one (in unison) with that special someone.

So tragic then, that the special someone is no more in this writer's life; having died.
