{Satan is going to win this thing! Satan is going to win all the marbles, and you need to get on his good side while you still can!}
Whenever I really love a book; one of two things will happen: (A) I will devour the book in a matter of days or (B) I will drag on reading it for as long as I can- overly attaching myself to the story and characters.
I have had two love affairs with Miss Madison Spencer; and upon realization that our first stint was painfully short lived, when it came to <Doomed> I decided to make a more serious commitment. Over the course of a month i found the majority of my free time consumed by Madison's adventures outside of hell.
Much like its prequel {Damned}, Doomed is a wildly fun and entertaining read that could very well swallow one whole; but don't let that fool you into thinking that it is an EASY read. Palahniuk manages to touch on serious issues revolving around family and forgiveness in a way that comes across as relatable and touching. One can't help but empathize with just about every character in the book.
Even when serious issues of religion and spirituality {which normally make me uncomfortable} came up, I found myself captivated- not only by Madison and her family- but by the larger picture; in which we realize that everyone is a pawn in the general good vs evil feud.
Despite its heavy subject matter, Doomed manages to remain outlandishly hilarious <"Maddy, sweetheart, if you don't drink your glass of rohypnol you won't get any tirramisu for dessert">, delectably cynical, satirical, and borderline genius.
Stylistically, Palahniuk delivers beautiful details and imagery so vivid that could make any storyteller jealous. Sentences like "My heart would swell like a water balloon filled with hot tears.." and "It's the blue your tongue sees when you eat peppermint." tore me to shreds.
The ending brings one killer of a cliffhanger; and even though i felt a bit ambushed and abandoned by it at first; I can't wait to see what (if anything) Madison's future holds.
