Imagination Land

Imagination Land

A Poem by Jess
"

Written for my high school's Open Mic Night on June 4, 2010. A friend of mine helped me revise a certain section, and it turned out better than I could've imagined.

"

In the land of make-believe

Fairy-tale characters are living their lives

With their spotless clothing

Hair that never moves out of place

And let’s not forget their perfect boyfriends-

Prince Charming, perhaps?

Or is that just for Cinderella?

They spend their days singing

With their flawless singing voices

That never miss a single note

Or waver even slightly out of tune

A song that draws all of the animals

In the forest out of their hiding places

Just to catch a glimpse of the beauty

Behind the voice-

Or is that just for Snow White?

They spend their nights sleeping

Passed out cold in their bedrooms

With obnoxious canopies framing their beds

Dressed like they were attending

A fancy coming-of-age ball

Instead of resting their eyes

On smooth satin

Waiting on something in particular-

True love’s first kiss, perhaps?

Or is that just for Sleeping Beauty?

With young girls growing up

Constantly surrounded by role models

Such as these

Is it really a surprise when their lives

Seem to dive head- first into chaos

Like a train testing its limits

Racing down the tracks so fast

It was nearly invisible?

Sure, Disney Princesses seem harmless enough

On the outside

But has anyone stopped to think about

What they tell our little girls?

They might just tell them

“Wait for someone to save you

Because you’re too weak

To do it yourself.”

They might say

“You’re going to have a perfect life

With flawless grades

Impeccable style

The ideal friends and

The perfect boyfriend.

And guess what-

You won’t have to work for

Any of it!”

And they’re too young to understand

That perfect doesn’t exist-

Only real does.

But by the time they realize it

They’ve tried to achieve perfect status

Through ways that often get them

In trouble with

The law

Their families

Themselves.

And they can’t take away

The wrong they’ve done

Leaving them with eternal

Guilt and regret.

All of this from

Simple children’s cartoons?

Maybe my imagination

Is just going haywire

Again.
