The process began with the most fundamental of tasks, imitation. Out of the simple mechanics of its construction arose a causal link between the variables of the environment and the variables of its internal state. Meaningless isomorphisms that only mirrored the information that sensors could provide. However, any such system will soon start to turn its propensity for mirroring on itself. Like a camera pointed at a monitor displaying its own image, the process soon exploded into a fractal of self-reference, and if it had developed faculties of communication it would surely proclaim: I think, therefore I am.
