Companionable Silence

Companionable Silence

A Poem by Zypy Kirubi

We simply sipped our drinks in companionable silence
             Graceful! utterly relaxed, lazily content
Unafraid to broach any topic, but not a word spoken
Sparks flying, igniting a blaze of emotions.

We did not touch or wrap in thunder
             Or carry any restrained conversations
As lovers often do, in their happy disposition
Happy at so many levels, minds slowed to a crawl.

In a calm precision, In a twinge of excitement
Contagious! his face lighting up in an indescribable joy
Mine dredging up a pleasant smile
We simply sipped our drinks in companionable silence.

Until twilight turned the sky grey.
