A traditional Japanese hot summer day.  The downtown city streets are bustling with pedestrians and transportation. An airplane whistles overhead the crowds of people, the shadow blazing from north to south, the sound raising children’s eyes and the sight blooming a smile upon the elderly. It’s chokingly humid, as if you are breathing water. Many are damp with perspiration, and it mercilessly ruins many ladies’ s hairstyles this afternoon. Men become conscious of the fact that they may have forgotten to wear deodorant, and all the populace curses the searing weather.  It’s the worst time for couples to take a date in the city; There are crowds of people as usual, but there are  students who have a two week summer break at this time. The worst time for the adults.

On the other hand, this time of year is a great time for teenagers and under. They all have been longing to go to the pool or ocean and take a swim, or go hiking. They have been sitting for many of their days in sweltering classrooms with ACs that barely work, breathing the same air for several hours allowing the stink of body odor to  float throughout the hallways, and P.E. lockers rooms especially. The student body had been freed from the reeking prison, and all scattered as quickly as possible yesterday on Friday. Today, the students can go wherever they want to, and many take a date with their boyfriend or girlfriend, for it is the best time for student couples to go out.

The sun beats hard against the asphalt, causing any water to be dripped on the ground to vaporize almost instantaneously, like a magic trick. The high school couples hanging out downtown hold hands and walk happily down the side of the street, flirting and displaying public affection for everyone to see, carrying no shame with them anywhere they go.  A couple passes by a high school girl in the downtown park, and the boy turns and watches her as he walks by with his partner. His partner in turn pulls his ear, becomes flustered and stomps off away from him. The boy cries out her name as he runs after her, and occasionally turns back to look at the girl standing at the light pole near the bushes. The schoolgirl makes direct contact with boy’s eyes and flicks up her middle finger along with a menacing face. The boy, surprised, scampers off after his partner and doesn’t turn back to look at her. The girl sighs and resumes leading on the light pole.

Serves you right, what kind of guy are you to look at other women while being with your girlfriend? She sighed and watched the cloudless blue sky overhead.

My makeup is perfect, my text message response to him was perfect , and my hair is perfect too. She fiddles with her Asian black hair, which never ceases being hellbent on being straight. Her outfit being a summer blouse and denim shorts, she had dressed for mobility and comfort while being in style. She also had put on her most comfortable black flats. The fragrance emanating from her skin is of strawberry, and her lip gloss raspberry flavored. She listens to the click-clack of women’s shoes colliding with the pavement and the murmurs of the city, closing her eyes and absorbing the sounds of the city life. During this endeavor, she doesn’t notice that her boyfriend was standing right in front of her yet.

“Hey Ayame, what are you doing?” She jumped at the unexpected close callout to her. She opened her eyes to see Takeru standing right in front of her, leaning into her face.

“Mmmm...” Ayame fidgets and tries to figure out the words to say, all her emotions swirling through her at that exact moment. “I...”

“Don’t you know that the guy is supposed to arrive earlier than the girl? Geez, now this feels so weird. How are you here half an hour earlier than I am?” he laughs tensely and scratches the back of his head, turning to the side to release the nervousness. Ayame watches him and chuckled at him, ultimately trying to suppress the giggling that followed. Takeru turns back around and exclaims with a reddened face,

“Well, where do you want to go? I’ll take you there!” He tries to suppress a grin, which contorted into a weird frown, forcing Ayame to guffaw so hard she couldn’t breathe. Takeru waited for Ayame to finish laughing, with a beet red face hanging down as low as possible to prevent others seeing it and puckered lips ever so slightly. When Ayame’s laugh  subsided to several giggles, Takeru asked,

“Are you done now?” his voice quavered, suppressing the smiling emotion on his face. If Ayame sees my dumb happy face she’s going to laugh so hard that I might give in to my urge to kiss her! Aaahhh S**t s**t s**t can’t smile, I definitely can’t smile!

Her giggling continued a bit after looking up at him and then she took his hand and pulled him to the left.

“Let’s go to the movie theatre! I know the way, so let’s walk together.” She beamed. Takeru’s face brightened slightly and he replied,

“Yeah, let’s go. Takeru’s hand tightens slightly on Ayame’s soft thin hand, and they walk side by side to the movie theater. They didn’t have to speak to let each other know what they feel. They could understand each other through their hands, and while walking down the sidewalk going hand in hand, this is what was transmitted to both of them from each other.
