JailbreakA Chapter by Zoey BalderstonChapter 30 of Love from AboveWe rush back to the house to get Janie, needing all the man
power we can get. “What’s going on? Fill me in,” she says on our way back to
the crash site. Libby fills her in on the details while my brain, muddled with
fright for Jeremy, tries to block out their strategizing. I fly ahead and above them, hoping the frigid night air will
help clear my head. I take deep breaths, trying to find a rhythm. I need to
focus so I can save Jeremy. Me being a frantic mess won’t do any of us any
good. We make it to the crash quickly and, with our combined
strength, push the car further into the woods, making it invisible to anyone
driving by. We make our way back to the hole and after sharing a foreboding
look with one another fly silently down it. After a few minutes of basically a
vertical freefall, Libby points out a lightening ahead. We fly quickly onto a
ledge near the top of the cavernous room. I scan the area frantically,
searching for Jeremy. Janie nudges my arm and points down to my right. Jeremy
is trapped in a stone cell on the back wall of the room. He's putting on a
brave face, but I know him well enough to see the fear in his eyes and the
slight trembling of his hands. Rage fills me and my frame begins to shake.
Janie places a hand on my shoulder. “Calm down, I’ll see what he knows.” Being a guardian angel,
Janie has powers Libby and I have yet to learn; telepathy being one of them.
She can open a two-way channel of communication over short distances. “Jeremy, Jeremy can you hear me?” she whispers, so Libby and
I aren’t left out on the conversation. I notice him stiffen and look around. “Yeah, Jeremy, it’s me.” I can only assume he asked if it
was Janie. “What do they want from you?” She asks. The silence stretches on
agonizingly as she listens to his response. She turns to us. “They want you, Kelsey. They say you’re in
a position to fall because you are going against the high council by being with
Jeremy. They want you to join them instead. Jeremy is bait as well as leverage.
His life depends on you selling your soul.” My head snaps back to Jeremy in
horror. “Up here,” Janie whispers, obviously letting Jeremy know
where we are. His eyes crawl up the wall and lock onto mine. Alarm crosses his
face, “Get out of here,” he mouths frantically. “Not without you,” I mouth
back. He looks nervously to the demon guarding his cell, luckily snoozing
rather than watching Jeremy have this conversation. I practically see the light
bulb click on above in his head. He looks to Janie, hope on his face. “He has a plan,” she says then pauses to listen. “Kelsey,
you get caught on purpose. That will lure all the demons in the area to Satan’s
lair; they won’t miss you selling yourself out. Then, when everyone is gone,
Libby and I bust Jeremy out of here!” “But how do I get out?” I ask, not too concerned for myself,
as long as Jeremy makes it out alright. “Simply say you refuse and fly out. It will take them a
minute to realize Jeremy’s gone.” Janie says after relaying my question to
Jeremy.
“Alright, let’s just hope it works.” I reply. © 2023 Zoey Balderston |
