Give me a world free from rules

And the hold of regulations

Let me choose

Let me act

Let me be

I will choose freedom

I will act on my conscience

I will be kind

Release me from mandates

And the fingers of authority

Around my throat

Let me breathe

Without restraint

Without covering

Without judgment

Let me seek truth

And knowledge

Instead of conformity

And narrative

Give me the gift

Of self-determination

Let me soar without chains

Seek without restriction

Give me independence

Let me do with it

What I will and I

Will open my hands

To greater gifts

Giving liberty to all

Has a libertarian sound to it. I like that; such a philosophy allows the individual to achieve maximum potential without abusing the rights of others. Unfortunately, immature or thoughtless people can pervert it to create anarchy.

This is one of those poems with a lot of meanings. When I wrote it, I wasn't thinking of politics. I was thinking of how I gave my freedom and independence to abusive men in exchange for safety and security. I got neither, and learned how precious freedom and independence is. It was a hard lesson. This piece can be expanded to many interpretations, as the reader sees fit.
