Dislocation

Dislocation

A Poem by ZoEL
"

"Dislocation" is defined variously. To me, it's an out-of-body experience, and it happens anytime and anywhere I go.

"

When you say “dislocation,”

People normally think

You are talking about

History, economics, or medical injury.

When I say “dislocation,”

I see myself

Savoring peanut rice milk (米漿) under the dim shine of dawn,

While in truth I’m sipping Cioccolotta Calda on a bench in Florence.

As a second language user of English,

“Dislocation” to me is not a noun,

But a verb.

Just the process of thinking about “dislocation”

Is Dislocat-ing.

The mental voice of my mother tongue

That tries to make sense of the dazzling world for me--

Like a mother --

Brings me back Home,

Dashing faster than the speed of light.

A “dislocated” interpretation,

Possibly liable for distorted meanings,

Travels through a foreign set of wires --

To redefine,

And Re- Locate.
