My Valentine

My Valentine

A Poem by Md. Ziaul Haque
"

History of the Valentine's Day

"

Opposed Emperor Claudius II bravely, the Roman, Saint Valentine,

The former considered marriage of young men as improper,

Thinking that single man would make better soldier,

Than those with wives and kin.

It was Valentine, standing against that inequality,

Performing marriages for young lovers in secret,

But was put behind the bars where the jailor, Asterius’ daughter would pay visit,

They say that with this beautiful girl Valentine fell in love deeply.

Before breathing his last “From Your Valentine” were the words as his sign,

An expression of love now for the lovers- “You are my Valentine”.

I admire how you incorporated history in this piece. It's always nice to remember the story behind a particular holiday, though most may not care. It's nice to know where the names of some holidays resurrect from and are born.
