Pohela Boishakh [Bangla New Year]A Poem by Md. Ziaul Haque'Pohela Boishakh' is popularly known as 'Bengali New Year'. The 14th April marks the first day of Bengali calendar, which is celebrated not only in Bangladesh but also in the Indian state of West BengCome you, the beginning of a dawn new, Ready we are to receive you, With Rabindranath’s immortal lyrics, And the lines of Nazrul that everyone seeks.
Being the mirror of a culture so unique in nature, Reminding us of our root, our origin, That with thy help the next generation will examine.
You bring smile to those who have long been scared of moving the cheeks, Also make us stunned with your dazzling colours and masks, You let the commoners forget the pains even if momentarily, The peddlers and the hawkers alike bless thee from the hearts happy.
You are the bridge between the past and the future, The fearless tradition defender, We salute you for beginning a new beginning, Forgetting all that is evil and cunning.
We wish for your appearance again and again, As from the sky falls friendly rain, Thee we hail ‘Pohela Boishakh’, Thee we hail ‘Pohela Boishakh’. © 2014 Md. Ziaul Haque |
