Chapter 14

Chapter 14

A Chapter by Keevan

2 months later, total of 4 months into my pregnancy.

"Remember that conversation we had a few months back?" Edward asked that night at dinner.

"No," I said, setting down my fork.

"The one about what you would name your kids," Edward said, also setting down his fork.

"Oh, yeah," I said, remembering that conversation. It seemed like a wierd conversation then, but back then, I never thought I'd be pregnant.

"I remember," Edward started. "that you wanted a girl to be Lacey because it was close to Lucy."

"Shut up," I grumbled. crossing my arms over my slowly expanding stomach. "what name would you pick out for a girl?"

"Hmm," Edward mumbled, leaning back in his chair. "I dunno. Something cute, like Anna, or Kimberly."

"Stupid names," I said, snorting a laugh. He grinned, and said, "Yeah, you're right. And they don't really go with 'Elric', do they?"

     "E-Elric?" I stammered.

"Well, yeah," he said. "I'm going to be the father, so the baby might as well have my last name, right?"

"I-I guess you're right," I said, still feeling a bit wierd about it. It was something I never really considered.

"So," he asked. "what about a boy's name? Can you think of anything?"

"Well," I began, thinking it over. "I've always liked the name Asher. Or Ivan."

"Those are some unique names," Edward said. "I like them. I think that Lucas would be a good one. Or Eric. Or even Jackson."

"That's quite a list of names, there," I said, kind of surprised that he actually had been thinking about it. "What else do you think for a girl?" I asked as I took a drink of my water.

"Oh, I don't know," he said, leaning back in his chair again and looking up at the ceiling as he spoke. "Ruth."

I nearly did a spit take. I was almost choking on my laughter when he said Ruth.

"What's so funny about that?!" Edward asked.

"I didn't know I was giving birth to an eighty year old woman, Ed!" I sputtered between my laughter. I almost dropped my glass.

When my laughter died away, Edward grumbled, "Well, what can you come up with, Ms. Perfect?"

"Um," I started. "maybe Jayden. Or Penny." I paused, and then said, "Or Serah, after my sister."

"I like that," Edward said, picking up his fork again. "So, for names, what are we set on?"

"Aready?" I replied. "There are still five months until the baby's born."

"I know, but I have a feeling that if we're not set in stone on choosing the name, then we'll forget and it'll end up being nameless for a few days."

     "Okay, well, you choose."

     "You choose."

     "Ed, really--"

"It's your baby, Lucy," he said, getting a flash of a sad look on his face as he said that. "You choose the name."

"Okay, if you insist," I said, feeling guilty once again. "Um, Asher for a boy, and...I can't decide on a girl name yet. If you think of anything, let me know."

"I'll be sure to do that," Edward said, continuing to eat his now-cold dinner. The guilt didn't go away. My hand found Edward's under the table, and I light took hold of it. He responded by lacing his fingers through mine. The guilt was still there. And I knew it would never go away.

"Just hold my hand," Edward was saying. Everything was black, and I knew I was in terrible pain. The baby was being born.

"Just hold my hand," Edward said again. "It won't hurt, I promise."

It was going to hurt. I knew it was. But that little shred of hope that it wouldn't was all I had to cling to as I gripped Edward's hand and let out a gut-wrenching scream from the pain of pushing a baby out of me. I was seeing white spots behind my closed eyes. It was unbearable, and it seemed to go on forever until the pain abruptly stopped and I heard the sound of a baby's cry. I opened my eyes and saw Edward looming above me, a happy smile across his face.

"See?" he said. "It didn't hurt. Look--" He looked off to the right. "Your--no, our baby is here." I followed Edward's gaze and caught a small glimpse of my baby. A healthy baby---

I opened my eyes that morning, woken up by the immense amount of sunlight pouring from my window and right into my eyes. I sat up, putting my hands on my stomach, thinking about my dream.

A boy. That's what the baby was in my dream. My heart actually fluttered with excitement. A baby boy would soon be mine, hopefully, in only a matter of months.
