Chapter 5A Chapter by KeevanBy the time Edward came home, I had finished dinner. "What took you so long?" I asked him as he walked in the door and slipped his shoes off while hanging his coat on the rack by the door. "It took me a while to find what I needed," he said. "It had to be perfect." "What did you have to get?" I asked, setting some plates on the table. "None of your business," he replied, sitting down. "Why not?!" "Because I said so." "Then no food for you!" I said as I pulled his plate away. He started laughing and took the plate back, saying, "It's top secret. I don't want to give it away." "Fine," I gumbled, setting down his plate. "I made rice and vegetables." I was too lazy to do anything else, so I made some rice, chopped and heated vegetables, and mixed it all together. He scoopped a ton of it onto his plate, obviously hungry and started eating before I could put someon my plate. I don't know why, but he obviously loved my cooking. After the first bite, he slowly chewed and swallowed. "What's the matter?" I asked. "It's too bitter," he said. I shoveled some onto my fork and ate it, a world of bitterness in my mouth. "Ack!" I said, after I swallowed. "I knew I put too much pepper in it!" "Got anything to even out the taste?" Edward asked. "Either plug your nose while you eat," I said. "or drinking something after every bite." I ate some more, and the celery was even bitter, and the green peppers didn't help. "This is awful," Edward said with a laugh after a few minutes of eating the terrible stuff. "You cook next time, then," I said, taking it all and scraping it into the garbage. "Look," Edward said, sounding serious. "I know today hasn't been a good day, and I know you're not in a good mood. Can you just stop being mad at me?" "Who the hell said I was mad?" I asked, throwing the bowl in the sink. "If you're not mad, then don't act all pissed off," Edward grumbled, standing up. "Shut up, a*s," I mumbled.
Nothing lasts forever. Like the relationship I share with Edward. I'm not an easy person to get along with, that's a certain, and I was stupid to think the relationship would last forever. I just never thought it would end because of me being jealous. The next morning, the smell of breakfast woke me up. I looked at my clock and it said eleven thirty. I never got up that late. I quickly got dressed and dashed downstairs, wondering if my guess was right. And it was: Edward was making breakfast. "Smells good," I said. "Why are you making breakfast?" "You told me to cook last night, remember?" he said with a playful smile on his face. "Didn't want to disappoint." Edward made toast, eggs, sausage, and bacon. It smelled delicious, even to one like me who never really ate much. "This is delicious," I said as I took a bite of egg. "It's just eggs," he said. "nothing special. Anyone can make them." "Whatever you say," I said, reaching across the table for a piece of bacon. It was clear to me: Edward was doing the old "forgive and forget" trick. It was a hint for me to do the same, so I decided to hop on board. That's when the phone rang. "I'll get it," Edward said as he stood up and made his way over there, wiping his hands on his pants. "Hello?" he said as he answered it. After a few seconds, he got a serious look on his face, and he said in a low voice, "Yeah, she's right here." He stood there and held out the phone to me. Curiously, I stood up and made my way over, taking the phone from Edward. "This is Lucy," I said into the phone. Edward stayed by my side. "Hello, I'm Marn Maya's lawyer, Randall Stone," he said. "You are aware of her death, aren't you?" "Yes, I am," I said, remembering the sweet old lady. "I'm calling to let you know that her funeral is this Saturday in Central City," he said. "You are familiar with the area, aren't you?" "Yes," I replied. "The funeral is being held at Central Cemetary," he said. "When you enter, there will be a big gathering for her. It'll be easy to spot, there are no other funeral services that day." "It's only for a day?" "Saturday is the service and the ceremony combined, and will start at twelve thirty noon," he said. "Sunday is a small reception party for her memorial at a small gazibo area nearby. Are you coming?" "Yes," I said automatically. Marn was the only family I had left, and then she died. Of course I was going to go. "You may bring a guest, if you wish," Randall said. "Well, I have to go. Oh, and before I forget, Marn wrote in her will for her eldest granddaughter to say a speech. See you on Saturday." Click. I hung up the phone, and Edward asked, "What was that about?" "Info about Marn's funeral on Saturday," I said. "I'll have to leave Friday and check into a hotel, and I probably won't be back until Monday. Marn's lawyer also said I could bring a guest. Wanna come?" "No," he said, walking back to the table. "And just why not?" "I never fully trusted that Marn lady, and I don't even know her," he said, going back to his eggs. "I don't think I should go." "I see your point," I said, sitting back down as well. "but she was my grandmother. You're going to be alone here all weekend." "I can just bug Winry," he said. "Al's getting the weekend off, so I was planning to hang out with him all weekend. Plus, I need to get my AutoMail upgraded." "Okay, if you say so," I said, yawning.
