Chapter 4A Chapter by KeevanBlah. :DThe days seemed to zip by until it was three days before my birthday. There was a carnival in town that would last a week, with fireworks every night. I really really hoped that Edward wouldn't make me go. Just thinking of carnivals made me think of rockets, which made me think of Alfons! Dinner the night before the first carnival day, Edward had asked me, "So, what do you want for your birthday?" "I've told you a million times," I said, getting annoyed yet again. "I don't celebrate my birthday, and after nineteen years, I'm not going to start. Don't get me anything. Don't do anything to celebrate. Just make it a normal day." "So you want a necklace, is that it?" he asked. "You didn't hear a word I said!" I shouted, standing up. "How come no one's listening to me!?" "Lucy, it's just you and me here," Edward said, pointing out the obvious. "Relax." "You know what? I won't relax!" I walked to the door, wrenched it open, and said, "You're taking care of cleaning everything tonight. If I come back and you didn't do anything, there'll be consequences. Got it!?" "You're not my mother, Lucy," Edward mumbled as he stood up and picked up our plates. I ignored him and left the house, slamming the door on my way out. ______________________________________________________________________________
Temper was a thing I still had to work on. It was dark, but I sat under a tree by the river. It was getting cold, but I didn't care. I had to let off some steam before going back. "So stupid, me getting mad like that," I mumbled to myself as I shivered. I looked up to the dark sky and noticed some dark clouds rolled in. It wasn't long before it started raining. "Perfect," I mumbled as the rain picked up quickly. "Nothin' like a good shower at nine thirty at night." I sighed loudly and hugged my knees, staring at the rough surface of the river, seeing all of the indents the raindrops were making as they plopped into the lazy stream. It felt like an hour had rolled by some time later. The rain didn't let up. Then I hear something: Thunder. It was loud, and it seemed to roll across the sky directly overhead. A few minutes later, the rain wasn't hitting me anymore. I looked up and saw Edward crouching near me with an umbrella covering both of us. "Ed," I said quietly without thinking. "C'mon, let's go home," he said, holding out his hand to help me up. "You shouldn't be out here during a thunderstorm. You have lightning to worry about." "I....okay." I grabbed his hand and he helped me stand up. I didn't realize how soaked I was until I felt how heavy my clothes were. I unzipped my sweatshirt, aiming to take it off, when Edward stopped me. "Keep it on," he said. "It's cold enough out here as it is." So, I zipped it back up again. I don't know what exactly happened next, but, somehow, Edward had his arm around me as we walked the twenty feet back to the house. And the strange thing was.....it felt right. ______________________________________________________________________________
Carnival: Day 1. Days left until my birthday: two. And Edward wouldn't let me forget it. "So, for your birthday," he started that morning. "I was thinking maybe--" "NO!" I shouted, cutting him off and hitting him in the back of the head. He just laughed and said, "You can't stop me from buying you something, Lucy!" "Gah...." I muttered as I plopped on the couch and sulked. "What do you think you're doing?" Edward asked, staring at me with disapproval on his face. "Um, I'm sitting on my couch," I replied. "Sitting on your butt when you could be with me enjoying the carnival?" "I'm not going!" "Yes, you are," he said, slipping his shoes on and throwing me mine. "Either you go with me, or I get you something for your birthday and throw you a big party. Your choice." ______________________________________________________________________________
"This is so stupid," I grumbled as Edward toated me around the carnival. Pretty much everyone in Resembool was there, no matter what age they were. There was a ferris wheel, a lot of stands selling food, and entertainment boothes and games on the side. "What do you want to do first?" he asked, ignoring my comment. "I want to go home," I mumbled, cringing as I saw a clown a few yards away. "Bzzt! Too bad!" "Gah..." Walking and walking in circles we went. And then Edward dragged me to the ferris wheel. The guy working there led us to a cart, and then closed the safety bar. "I can't believe we're doing this," I muttered, feeling my stomach lurch as the wheel started turning backwards. "Haven't you even ridden on one of these before?" Edward asked, leaning his head back and crossing him arms. "They're fun and relaxing." "They're high and terrifying...!" My stomach lurched again as the wheel approached the top, and then slowly went down. Edward started laughing at me. I hate carnivals.... ______________________________________________________________________________
I couldn't take it anymore. It was starting to get dark, and Edward didn't want to leave yet. "You're nineteen," I said (his birthday was a few months ago). "not six. Why can't we leave yet!?" "'Cause I'm having fun," he said with a laugh. He had won a pink stuffed bear at that last game..... I sighed and cursed under my breath. But then my spirits rose, because I saw a cart selling bottles of beer. I made my way over there without Edward noticing. "Are you of age?" the elderly man selling it asked me. "Of course," I lied (the legal age is 21). He shrugged and handed me a bottle. "Want one for your friend?" He pointed at Edward. "Ah, sure," I said, taking and paying for both bottles. As I walked back toward Edward, I hid the second bottle in the bag I brought with and had slung on my shoulder. "What are you doing with that?" Edward asked, eying the bottle as I popped off the cap. "Never you mind," I mumbled taking a big drink. © 2011 KeevanAuthor's Note
