HopeA Poem by Zephaniah DevonA short poem about the wonder of hope.
A woman stands next to a hospital bed,
Anxiously twisting her wedding band. And although her legs are feeling like lead, She knows that she must be strong and must stand. For her dear husbands sake she must have hope. Otherwise, how would she be able to cope? Hope makes the teenager put down the knife. Although she already feels dead inside, It prevents her from taking her own life, And finally gives her a little pride. Even though she spends a lot of time crying, It is hope which stops her from dying. It's the light at the end of the tunnel, For the father of three who's lost his job. The glimmer of hope keeps him functional, When all he wants to is sit and sob. Hope for a bright future keeps him going, And fills him with a happy sense of knowing. It's true that it's there inside all of us. So even when things may seem beyond dark, Don't fall apart and make a massive fuss, Never let it leave a permanent mark. Because our hope is the only thing we need, In order for us to become truly freed.
