Envy of the Sun

Envy of the Sun

A Poem by Peter Zaelio

Driving makes one more introspective,
But when coupled with music that preaches hope for the future spurred by a sense of loss,
The feeling of driving towards an empty home and an empty bed washes over me like a melancholy wave,
Eroding away at any elation left for the day.
I miss you so much.
The days I got to come home to you were the best,
Regardless of the monotonous grind of work;
And like a beautiful sunrise over the Meadows of a grassy plain, You bathed my life in a beautiful unparalleled light.

I can say, for the first time, that I'm jealous of the sun,
That it can look upon you and smile.
I'm jealous of the moon as you dance in its light and it can envy your grace,
And I'm jealous of even the wind, that it can caress your skin as I wish I could.

You make everyday that much brighter, and it takes you being gone, to make me love you all the more.

~ enchanting poetry, monsieur peter... and what makes it surreal for me is the contemporary verbiage and imagery... ~ driving back from work is such a circa 2016 image... and yet you've enmeshed it so beautifully with the timeless sun and the moon... ~ the final thought in the closing line is heartbreaking... i wonder if modern life induces such a stupor that we ignore the effect of the most precious people in our lives...
