The Seventh Flag over Texas

The Seventh Flag over Texas

A Story by Zebulon Poe
"

This is just an idea I had for a script I plan to write. A rouge militia from Texas steals a top secret weapon, then leads a valiant struggle of dominance over the Texas government, military, and citizens eventually leading to a seventh flag to be flown

"

The Seventh Flag is a story of dominance over what in one persons eyes is a tyrannical system bent on total control.  Situated in the hill country of Texas, a small militia has come to recieve stolen documents on a top secret orbital particle beam weapon.  Such a weapon would give its controller absolute power over almost any nation, for the beam has complete accuracy down to the size of a pinhead.  The group formulates a plan which revolves around one of their members using his clearance level to allow the entrance to the facility that houses the controller to it.  After gaining access by force, the group steals the device, and retreats back to their base in Texas.  For a few days, they let the heat die down as they discover what the device can and cannot do.

Once they had grasped the underlying technology, then adapted it to their use, they foil a plan by the United States to shoot the satellite down.  Then the militia targets an entire city, not some large populace, but a town of 400 in Nebraska.  In only seconds of using the weapon, the ambient temperature of the air in town rises 300 degrees Farenheit, killing most of the population.  Those that survived the initial blast were vaporized on the second shot which was of a power level 30 times higher than the last.  A video is uploaded to Youtube taking credit for the destruction, and posting a message, "REMOVE ALL TROOPS, SECRET SERVICE, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, AND PUBLIC SERVANTS FROM THE STATE OF TEXAS IMMEDIATELY, OR MORE UNITED STATES CITIES WILL BE REDUCED TO ASHES".  After a couple of days, there was no answer from the United States, as it took the easy route of trying to hunt them all down.

The group then decides on a more appropriate target, and selects a Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth, Texas.  At midnight, the power level was set to absolute maximum, and a wide, very thin beam was selected.  Then out of the night sky, a thin beam appeared which was concentrated on the lake opposite the base.  For two minutes it served as a warning for the base that doom had arrived, as it vaporized hundreds of thousands of gallons of water which quickly rose to form a towering thunderhead.  Without warning, the beam then began moving at a crawl of twenty miles per hour towards the base, widening as it drew closer.  Once it had reached the shore, the beam was exactly as wide as the base was.  The base had for 10 minutes been evacuating its troops out of the area when the beam began vaporizing everything down to a depth of a foot.  In only a minute, every structure, building, and aircraft, including the men on base, were clouds of steam rising into the night sky.

After this attack, the United States began firing everything it could at the satellite, but to no avail, as the beam was widened the the point that it formed a kind of shield around itself.  The group gave the exact same warning as before to every major news agency in the country.  Over time, the United States found out the identities of each member of the militia, and began to hunt them all down, one by one.  Then, after leading an absolute death race away from police and the government, the last of the group uses the weapon to eliminate his pursuers, and uses its full force to completely reduce the city of San Diego to a wasteland of molten rock.  Another message is sent not long after that, telling the United States that if it did not withdrawl from Texas, all of the nations great cities would be destroyed, one per day, until their demands were met.

After great debates that tore into the night, the United States decided to give up the lone star state, and a new militia emerged to declare Texas as its own nation, with a new flag to be flown over it.  This ends their great struggle to take their beloved state, and give it a new future, unfortunately the United States wants their land back.

But thats another story.

I'm working out a rough outline for which I will place the most interest in the militia, and yes, I will have to humanize the weapon as well. I have thought about including a traitor that double crosses the militia, then uses the weapon to his own ends, ending in a fight between the two groups over control of the Texas capital. The reason I chose Texas is it has a rich history, and has had 6 flags flown over it, which is the key thought behind all of this, a seventh just sounds cool.

Well, the entire story could change over the course of the project. I'm writing it using Final Draft 7, and once the first draft is completed, I will post it here.

As a Texan (albiet displaced at the moment) I must say this has merit. Hmmmmmm. Can't wait to see more.

This sounds really interesting: I'm looking forward to see how this looks when it's all done.

My only concern is as to where the reader sympathy should lie? Are we on the side of the government, or do the anarchists draw our favour more? Plus, if we are to sympathise with the government, we'll need a human sized focus.

Personally, I would also add a few other factors to the story: a weakness in the weapon (such as eventual energy depletion, or charging times), and another group with its own agenda, possibly undermining the straight fight between the government and the radicals.

But that's just me.

Why Texas?
