Rash decisions - Chapter 4A Story by Zara87The Keira and Daniel saga continuesChapter 4
“Daniel? Did
you hear what I said?” Sophie’s petulant voice broke into his murderous
thoughts.
He faced
Sophie and smiled “Yes I did, you were talking about your idiotic ex-boyfriend”
he said with a smile so false he wandered how Sophie didn’t notice. Trisha was
frowning at him.
“Has he
gone?” Trisha asked Keira as she came back into the room. Daniel willed his
eyes not to look at her. Who gave her the power to make him feel this way? Well
she wasn’t going to get to him anymore.
“Yeah” she
replied, her voice slightly breathless
“Sophie would
you like some coffee?” he asked suddenly standing up before Keira sat down.
“Sure” Sophie
replied. He reached for her hand and led her out of the room and into the
kitchen.
Keira watched
as Sophie and Daniel left the kitchen hand in hand and turned her gaze towards
Trisha.
“The lasagne
was great” she improvised, wanting to say something to fill the awkward
silence. Trisha was looking at her and shaking her head.
“What were
you and Blake doing at the front door?” she asked quietly
Keira frowned
and then blushed “Nothing. Why?”
“Daniel was
watching the two of you” she replied simply.
Keira felt a
moment of regret before getting angry at herself. So what if he had seen Blake
kissing her? What rights did Daniel have over her? None.
Daniel came
back into the dining room at that point with a giggling Sophie holding his hand
“Trisha, we can’t find the coffee” Daniel said
Trisha, looking
resigned said “You guys go sit in the living room. I’ll bring in some coffee”
When Keira
made her way into the living room with Sophie and Daniel trailing behind her,
she tried to tell herself the pain she was feeling in her chest was the start
of a cold. Nothing at all to do with picturing the two of them in bed together.
“Sophie,
didn’t you say something about going to your mum’s tonight?” Trisha came into
the room just as Keira was about to switch on the telly.
“Oh damn, I
almost forgot” Sophie said, her hand still in Daniel’s.
“Do you have
to go?” Daniel asked
Sophie smiled
“Give me your phone” she said and Daniel gave it to her smiling.
Keira thought
she heard a snort of disgust from Trisha before she practically dragged Sophie
out of the house leaving Daniel and her alone in the room. The silence dragged
on and on. She refused to be the first to break it.
Where was
Trisha? Keira looked at her watch. It was 8.30pm and she had work tomorrow. It
was time for her to make her exit. She could feel Daniel’s gaze burning a hole
in her back as she left the room.
“Where are
you going?” Trisha asked as she reached for the front door handle.
“Home” Keira
said as if she wasn’t trying to sneak out
“Without
saying goodbye?” Trisha asked
Keira rolled
her eyes “Bye Trisha, I’ll see you tomorrow”
“How are you
getting home?” she asked
She hadn’t
thought of that. It was Sunday night and public transport was bound to be a
nightmare.
Keira did her
best pout “Could you give me a lift?”
Trisha smiled
“I’d love to but my car is at the garage”
She realised
why Trisha was smiling “I’ll take the bus then”
“No way
Keira. You’re not some invincible superwoman, whatever you may think. You are
not going home alone” Trisha replied already moving towards the living room
“Daniel can
you give Keira a lift home please? I don’t want her going home at this hour by
herself”
Keira didn’t
hear a reply and would rather walk home than have him grudgingly drive her.
Besides, the close quarters of the car wouldn’t help matters.
Suddenly his
voice came from right beside her “Let’s go”
Keira forced
her heart to slow its beat down as she stepped out onto the driveway. She was
definitely going to sit in the back seat.
Her plan fell
flat as soon as she saw his two-seater car. He opened the passenger door and
got into the driver side. Keira stood outside for a moment trying to compose
herself.
“I haven’t
got all night” Daniel’s gruff voice broke her breathing exercise
He made it so
easy for her to hate him. She got into the car and slammed the door shut with
extra force. He didn’t comment but she saw his jaw clench in the mirror.
“Put on your
seatbelt” he commanded making her grit her teeth. He knew she hated being told
what to do so she defied his expectations and put on her seatbelt.
She’d clearly
surprised him because for a moment he just stared at her. She refused to speak
to him. He started the car and drove out of the driveway.
“Where do you
live?” he asked a moment later
“Same place”
she replied, loathed to even speak two words to him.
“Really?” he
asked surprised
She didn’t
reply. She was desperately keeping the image of Sophie and him together in her
mind. It would stop her thinking foolish thoughts about kissing him.
They rode the
rest of the 10 minute drive in silence, the tension building with each stolen
look in the rear-view mirror.
She was
surprised at how well he still knew the streets and where she lived. The car
pulled up on the side street next to her building. She undid her seatbelt and
forced her eyes not to look at him but she couldn’t resist one last look and
that was her mistake.
He was
looking right back at her. His eyes with the same stormy look they had before
Trisha had interrupted them in the kitchen. She quickly got out of the car and
made her way through the non-car street to her building. She heard Daniel get
out of his car and his footsteps as he walked up beside her.
“I’ll walk
you to your door” he said as she hurried up her walk. He was walking right
beside her with his arm occasionally brushing against hers. The heat that
flowed through her arm was indescribable. If that was what one brush against
his arm was like then what would...Keira refused to finish the thought.
She walked up
to her door and took out her keys with fingers that were trembling. She
breathed in quickly and pushed the front door open. She walked in and switched
on the light before turning around to close the door.
Daniel stood
there watching her, the same look of hunger in his eyes and her heart leapt
painfully. She couldn’t let this happen.
“Thanks for
the ride” she said not looking him in the eye and closing the door shut.
She let out a
soft moan of frustration as heard his footsteps walk away. That had been the hardest
thing she’d ever done.
Keira dropped
her keys onto the table, took off her jacket and sighed at the big red stain on
her tank top. She’d forgotten her white top at Trisha’s.
Someone was
knocking at her door. Her heart leapt. Was it Daniel? Her traitorous feet
walked towards the door and her equally traitorous hands opened the door.
