Chapter 1

Keira pulled up in a taxi to her friend’s birthday party a little late with the house full of people. She looked down one more time to the dress she was wearing, a maroon coloured single strapped dress Trisha had helped her pick up last weekend. At the time Trisha had convinced her to buy it even though it showed much more skin than she was used to.

She paid the driver and made her way into the house, greeting some of the people she knew. Some from Trisha’s work place, a few mutual friends and lots of vaguely familiar faces. How was she going to find Trisha in this mass of people?

She saw her friend Lucy on the stairs and she shouted over the noise of the music to her. Miraculously Lucy heard her and motioned for her to go upstairs. Keira barraged her way through people.

“Hi Lucy. Do you know where Trisha is?” Keira spoke in Lucy’s ear

“She’s upstairs honey”

“Thanks” Keira made her way past her to the top of the stairs, which was considerably less packed.

“Trisha?” she called out, heading for the bedroom.

“In here Keira” came Trisha’s voice from the bathroom

“How many people did you invite?” Keira asked as she spotted her friend putting on mascara in the bathroom mirror.

“Everyone I know of course!” Trisha grinned, giving Keira a hug

“Happy birthday honey” Keira hugged her back

“Thank you. Now let me see you properly in this sexy dress that I picked out!”

Keira self consciously did a quick twirl for her friends benefit who then proceeded o squeal like a teenage girl.

“I can’t wait till he sees you in this!” Trisha grinned

“Tell me why you invited Blake? He hates me” Keira moaned

“Blake?” Trisha asked confusedly

“That IS who you were talking about, right?” Keira asked, worried her friend was trying to set her up with some guy

“No, I meant Daniel of course” Trisha replied deadpan

Keira felt like someone had literally grabbed her heart and squeezed it, hard. He was here? Right now?

She rushed out of the bathroom and practically collided into something very solid and almost fell onto the floor had someone not grabbed hold of her.

“Leaving so soon?” Blake’s sexy voice reverberated around her head

Great. That’s all she needed.

Life was having a real laugh at her expense tonight.

Best way to handle this was to just walk right on by like nothing had even happened. Ignore him.

“That’s right, walk away, like you always do. Leave the rest of us behind to pick up after your tornado” Blake’s said as she stood at the top of the stairs.

Blake knew just which buttons to push with her. She hated that.

She turned around and faced him. She had really hurt him and now he would do anything to get back at her.

“We’ve been through this before Blake. Let it go” she replied, she needed to get out of the house.

“We haven’t been through anything; you broke up with me without so much as a reason!” Blake retorted, his face an angry mask

Keira moved forward involuntarily “I told you why”

Trisha walked past them at that point out of the bathroom “I’ll leave you guys to it” she said, ignoring Keira’s pleading look.

“Told me what exactly?” Blake asked

“That I’m not the right person for you-” she began, noticing how he stepped away whenever she stepped even a little bit towards him.

Blake laughed humorously “And that’s your choice is it? You get to decide who the right person for me is?”

“No. I just KNOW I’m not the right girl for you. I’m sorry” she saw his him shake his head, almost pityingly.

“Was I not a good boyfriend? Did I not treat you right? Did I cheat? Did I lie?” he asked quietly facing the door of the shower.

“No, you were a perfect boyfriend Blake” Keira stepped towards him, gently holding touching his arm, willing him to understand. Blake turned around at her touch.

*           *           *           *           *           *           *

Daniel couldn’t find Trisha anywhere. He’d been at the party for almost an hour already and he’d seen Trisha just once in all that time. He spotted Lucy in the corner.

“Hey Lucy. Have you seen Trisha?” he asked over the blare of the speakers.

“Yeah, she’s upstairs with Keira” Lucy replied

She was here. Trisha had told him that she wouldn’t be coming. He was bound to bump into her at some point or other, considering they shared a best friend. He just hadn’t realised he’d be seeing her so soon after coming back. Better to bite the bullet now. Get her out of his system so to speak.

He made his way upstairs and the sound of the music reduced dramatically. He heard voices from the bathroom and a gut-wrenchingly familiar laugh. Keira was in there.

“-and she wouldn’t even let me buy the damned thing” a man’s voice, more laughter

“Blake that’s not how you do it. Here let me” Keira’s voice. He hadn’t heard that voice in years. It was smoother, more mature.

Daniel stood rooted to the spot outside the bathroom. He wanted to leave Keira and this Blake guy to it. But something was keeping him there, a sick, torturous need to know who Blake was.

“Keira...I love you” Blake said and Daniel’s inability to move suddenly vanished as he made his way back downstairs.

Fresh air. He needed fresh air.

About
I love reading and writing. I particularly love to read science fiction but don't have the nerve to write such a complex genre. So I write romance - not that it's any less complex! I've never had.. more..
