It's Iven

It's Iven

A Chapter by Zahra

Again, I found myself staring at the computer for hours on end, reading every cruel harsh message directed to me. Feeling sorry for myself, again. I knew it was way past my bed time but I didn’t really care. I heard a quiet opening and closing of a door down the corridor. He was home. I left my room to see him. Unexpectedly, He was carrying a few bags with him- which he eventually dumped on the round dining table. I stared at him casually in the eyes.

“You do know mom will ask me where you got those from…” I whispered gently while raising my eyebrow

He didn’t respond. He just listlessly strolled on into my room- without asking me. Sighing under my breathe I followed on. Once in my room, he lifted my pearl white laptop to his face as if the screen wasn’t bright enough. Going through my stuff, again. That really agitated me.

“Ivan? letting those trolls get to you again?” He chuckled while messing up my hair, dangerously holding my laptop with one hand. I pretended not to care about him teasing me.

“I told you my name isn’t Ivan its Iven, I-V-E-N” I loudly whispered trying not to wake mom up.

He laughed again, while insolently dropping my laptop back on my dark brown table and slumping lazily on my chair. He started to go through all the Facebook messages with insults and harsh messages towards me. Before I knew it, he was already typing back to them, which kind of excited me. I felt happy to have someone defend me.

“Look at this guy, being a stupid idiot- how could you let him get to you?”

I was kneeling on the cold carpet-less floor next to him. After a few minutes my knees already began to feel sore and painful. I noticed my phone in his pocket. It was my chance. Discretely as I could I placed my two fingers in his pocket while he was busy typing away. I tried to get a firm pinch of the phone while slowly pulling it out. It was working! I managed to pull half of it out. Suddenly, I could feel his painful grip of his hands grasp my arm...

“Nope, no phone for you- you’re too young and you have enough devices anyway.”

That was just his excuse for taking my phone just because he doesn’t have his own. He put my phone back in his pocket and started to read on my laptop. Not long after that he got up, went to the kitchen and started looking in the fridge. While he was away, I went through all the Facebook messages and looked throughout the conversation between him and my schoolmate (bully). Elijah seemed to grill him pretty well, which made me smile like a child getting an ice cream.

“Ivan, would you like to go out?” Elijah said while opening a can of soda

I thought a long time about that, I was feeling lazy and stiff to do anything active. And If my mom woke up and found me not around then that would be catastrophic!

“I’m not stupid enough to go out now and I told you " its Iven not Ivan” I cunningly said

“Yes, and you’re not stupid enough to leave the door unlocked, I-VEN!” he said after finishing off his soda, gulping it down in seconds.

“I- I left it open for you…” I guiltily said while looking to the corner of my eyes.

It really hit me when he said that. I keep forgetting to close the door even though I’m specifically told to.

“Just come with me, I have a surprise!” Said Elijah with a sly smile stuck to his face.

I decided to listen to him and I got my grey hoodie on and made my way to the lift with him. It was a disgusting area where we lived, rubbish everywhere and so unmaintained. I really hated living in such a place, but I had to make-do. The lights in the lift kept on flickering which creeped me out in the beginning but have now gotten used to it.

Once we had gotten out of the flat I started directing to the bus-stop which was to our left.

“Where are you going? I have a motorbike now” Elijah shouted already comfortably seated in his new- rather second handed motorbike.

Where did he get that? He can’t even afford a phone? Oh, this is what I hated most about Elijah, always stealing just because he can. As if it’s just okay to do. Oh, did I ever tell you? Only I know about Elijah, nobody else, Elijah is MY secret…

I really enjoyed this! The dialogue was very well written and the ending really made me wish to see more of what happens next. Definitely a great way to keep the reader involved in wanting to see more. The only real issues were a couple of minor spelling/grammar errors, but that's nothing to fret over. Overall the writing was very well done and had a nice flow to it. Keep up the awesome work!
