The Speedy Tumble

The Speedy Tumble

A Story by ZKM_2010

The speedometer crept to 120 as John took a sip of Jack Daniels. His wife was asleep in the front seat and their twin sons were strapped in the back, both in booster seats. They were returning from a happy vacation and almost on their way home. But they, never did get home. At least not John and his wife.

As the speedometer kept climbing and the car cruised smoothly through the expressway, John started to feel light headed. He couldn't tell if it was because he was drunk or because he was tired from driving for hours. He kept dozing off when all of a sudden he encountered a pothole on the road. Unable to stop, John jerked the steering wheel to the left and swerved dangerously close to the road barriers. However, he managed to control the car and got back on the road. But unfortunately, he got back on the wrong road and instead drove on  the opposite lane.

Oblivious to the mishap, John sped on, until headlights blared into his eyes. A truck, coming from the opposite direction crashed head-first into John’s car. The small car crumpled in and caught on fire. No one survived the accident. Not even the truck driver.

They couldn't even bury John and his family properly. John’s mother had held her grandsons only once before they were no more.
