The Shadows, the Flashlight.

The Shadows, the Flashlight.

A Poem by Zackery Alan Daley
"

A poem about darkness and loneliness.

"

I'm not afraid to say I'm afraid.
Afraid of today, tomorrow, even now I say.

Its all okay, hopefully.  Skies these days are so gray...

I feel empty, where has my soul gone.
What ever happened to the rock and roll songs...
I am full of love, I love everyone.

The satire, the sarcasm, misunderstood intellect.
Will this existence ever be done?

A modern Catallus, post-Greco-Roman references...
The last of the classical vanguard.

Ovid, Plato, Aristotle,

What philosophies are these?

Another Sartre narrative of existentialism,

     dulls the sharpened mind.

O what of Alexander and his great campaigns?

The fear of the Golden Horde,

A Macedonian Phalanx, the Roman Testudo.
How history is so trivial,

A dampened cloth smothering the flame of progression.
Burning the libraries, destroying the culture.
The mysterious sins of our fathers.

Is it so out dated?

Do you not also see the reverse of our ages?

It appears our shadow cast forward,
the light at our backs.
We walk toward darkness,
Apparitions growing taller.
Absence of light dancing on the walls.

Egypt still burns as it has for millennia.
Factions differ, but the battle rages.

The people "advance" throughout our ages.

This is our nuclear age, the time of demi-gods.

Safety an illusion of the mind.

The only safety is trust.

The fact is our race is limitless,

Unless we have the grace and humility.
To shackle ourselves as Titans.
Damning us to the deep.
Selfishness will damn our children,

There is to be nothing left but shadows.
We are losing the war to primordial dark.

This is who and what we are.

I must admit it is a very well written poem. the words are crafted, I much liked the way you abstracted human history in a poem, and the affinity between us,the past, present, future. I read that comment below as you said there is no point, even this is poetic. while you all try to figure out what the point of oue lives would be, the truth is there is no point. I felt this in the poem that we never take lessons from our ancesters and ancient populaces, very pity indeed that we still make their mistakes. thank you for that poem, I liked it very much, and best luck

It has a eclectic point. There is depth to this poem. It bridges history, philosophy, and literature to illustrate an overall idea. I enjoyed it. I would say its a thinking mans poem but that is a wondrous thing because we want to inspire people to conjure thought in their minds.

I'm not sure how to review this, because I don't know what you're trying to say.
If what has happened is still happening and what will happen has already happened, there isn't a lot we can do aabout it.
