Nature, Where Did You Go?A Poem by Zachary Dary
I look out the window.
I see the sunlight shining through the branches. I see the tall buildings in the distance. I hear the wind, the birds and the dead leaves. I hear the endless hustle of humans. I smell the crisp air. I smell the toxic fumes as they tickle my nose. I gaze up at the cloud covered night. I see gray clouds, horizon to horizon. I see the lights from the city extend for miles in the sky. I hear the cars go by. I hear the distant thunder. I feel just how small we are. I feel how large our impact really is. I lay out beneath the clear night sky. I see the countless stars. I see the endless black. I hear the wind. I hear the cars driving by. I feel the stillness of the universe. I feel the rotation of the earth beneath my body. The entire time, I wonder why. Why have we done this? When will the lushness of Nature be back? I could always leave. Be surrounded by nature out in the mountains. But why should I leave? I didn't do this.
