Freedom Of The Soul

Freedom Of The Soul

A Poem by ZDMusgrove
"

This came to me after reading the quote, "Every secret of a writer's soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind, is written large in his works." (Virginia Woolf)

"
My soul has been stolen by my work.
It is wrapped around each line like a fine scarf,
Or a treacherous serpent.
I will let you decide.
It coats my words in a fine glaze of experiences.

My soul runs free
With a dust cloud of letters at its heel.
It dashes from line to line
Leaving footprints of memories on everyone.
It seems to spend more time with my writing than with me.

I wonder what would happen
When it would slip and fall,
But to my amazement it would stumble
With the most elaborate grace.

Maybe I am looking at it wrong.
Maybe I don't own my soul, but my soul owns me.

I like the ending of this because I went through this with my own soul. Trying to connect and understand and just co exist with it. Or maybe not so much my soul but my persona as a writer >.> but still I felt this one. And you presented it so wonderfully though it was brief. I enjoyed it.

Nice. Good questions you pose at the end there. Do we own the soul or does the soul own us. But great poem. I enjoyed. thanks for sharing

A powerful poem my friend.
"Maybe I am looking at it wrong.
Maybe I don't own my soul, but my soul owns me."
The above question is a very good one. Sometime I believe we are just mice running in a maze till we have nothing left. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

"...a fine scarf or a ...serpent..." - I really liked that duality. It all depends on how you view the exposing of your soul by YOU ! - certainly makes one think. The final stanza shows just how much of a jemmy bar Woolfs words have been to your mind - opening all sorts of thought processes. just what makes up the ME that I thought I knew? Who or what is in the driving seat?
This is your strongest yet ZD.

Just a small note - In the penultimate stanza would you consider rewriting the second line so that the aren't two lines on top of each other ending in 'fall'?
