Selkies

A young man goes down to the sea and discovers a beautiful woman sitting on rocks. She dives into the sea and he follows her. A poem about pursuing your first love.

I once saw a Selkie,

Down by the Sea.

She laughed and smiled

And waved to me.

And off those rocks she dived,

To down below

In that Great Blue Sea,

Where the Selkies go.

And O',

I couldn't bear to see her go.

So I followed her

To down below.

Once under the Water,

Did I see her Selkie kingdom.

Seals and humans alike swam

In freedom.

I spotted her,

Changing into a seal.

Swimming away from me again,

So I followed her with zeal.

Past rocks and ridges,

The Selkie swam.

While I chased her,

Like a to-be slaughtered lamb.

I saw her turn to the 'nets,

And O' she swam towards them

I opened my mouth to scream,

For I had to warn 'er.

But she didn't get caught:

Rather, she untangled

A lowly shark, caught in the net,

Before it could be strangled.

As the shark swam off,

She turned to me,

And shed her skin once more.

O', I saw how beautiful was she.

With one pale hand

She cupped my face.

Her golden hair swirling,

As we embraced.

But O',

As we did

Another Selkie found us,

By the name of Arasid.

He screamed, he shook.

And from my arms

He took,

My blessed Selkie girl.

And O',

I couldn't bear to see her go.

So I followed her,

To down below.

Old Arasid was no match for me;

Even in seal he couldn't overpower,

The strength of my love,

For he was a selfish coward.

Onto my maiden's finger I slipped,

A band made of gold.

That I had taken

From Arasid's hold.

Many adventures we had together,

But I could see her yearning

For down below.

And 'twas to be my learning:

O',

She returned to the Sea.

Gleefully,

But sad to wish me

A final goodbye,

From my Selkie maiden down below,

I love it! I love how there was use of fantasy, because can someone hold their breathe that long?
