SpiritA Chapter by Yui TarsisSpirit Kayako's her name. During her graduation, she chose to be a Fighter, and was hand-picked to be a Black Mage.Spirit I jump in a perfect arc, landing right behind the monster, and burn it alive without even looking back. Hard times like these called for no mercy. All mine had been worn far too thin a while ago. The weapon I held at my side was a simple gray staff, with a handle consisting of a split down the middle and the end having a similar split, the two opposing ends twirling around each other and slowly thinning, yet never touching. They exposed into an orb, which was a sphere while I wasn't using the staff, a star when I attacked, and a cube when I used defensive or supportive magic. I walked on as the sun set on my side, either scalding, smiting, or just simply melting every enemy I came across. I'd been doing this a while, so I was experienced enough to know that I should save my energy and ignore the small ones. A friend had asked me to do this. This might be oh-so surprising, but I didn't tend to have many friends. So the ones I did have, I was loyal to with all my being. It was one of my more simple quests. Kill a dragon. Even if she had inadvertently begged me to be careful, and warned me like it was an actual threat, I wasn't concerned. Four years on the job, and I haven't been defeated once. I travel alone. I don't need the help of others. I stay far, dodge, and attack hard. It's a strategy that's worked for me all this time, and I didn't very much care to change it. There's a growl nearby. I recognize it immediately. It's a dragon. I must be getting close. Might want to be prepared for a surprise attack. I think, walking forward as if nothing in the world mattered. A clearing opens up, and I enter. In the middle of it, sits a dragon. It's coat was a blinding white, even during the night, and it had piercing blue eyes that seemed to stare into your soul. It might've just been me, but it seemed somehow... intelligent... But that was impossible. None of the monsters here had any half of a mind. After a short stare down, I chose to make the first move, holding up my staff to use a magic attack. Just as I did, it was gone. In the split second it took to make the motion, my staff had been thrown aside like garbage. I looked up in fear- actual fear...- realizing my mistake. I let my guard down. It held up one of it's massive hands, bringing it down at lightning speed. I only barely managed to jump out of the way, standing quickly and running straight for my staff. I was too slow. The dragon grabbed my cloak, yanking me back and throwing me like a rag doll across the clearing. I hit the unforgiving floor with a sickening cracking noise. The dragon looms over me, it's defeated prey. This is it, huh? Heh... Kara, I really should've listened to you... Even as I accept it, I'm scared. I knew what I signed up for, when I applied for the Fighter group, but... I don't want to die... I shut my eyes tight, and prepare for my demise.
