Before You Wake -- PrologueA Story by YoursTrulyIn a dreamlike world, can two different beings find love in each other?
I blinked several times, trying to grab hold of what was happening. My skin was covered in bumps, leaning against the cold wall. I grabbed my knees and replayed the scene in my head. I had been in my room, listening to a CD from my favorite band. I was scribbling on my sketchbook, hoping I would find inspiration for a picture. A loud crack shook through my house. More cracks soon flooded in. Glass shattered, booms, and loud shouts came from downstairs. I could hear the noise through my song on full blast. I carefully took my eyes of my sketchbook and removed my headphones. Slowly I stood and flicked off the lights. Fumbling around, I searched for a weapon to defend myself. Finally my hand came across a suitable object, and I checked to see what it was. Air spray. Perfect. What was I going to do, spray the intruder to death? I peeked out the window, seeing if there was a getaway car outside. Nothing. My mom is out of town on vacation, and my sister had recently moved in with a friend. I was home alone, and I was an easy target. I shook the negative thoughts out of my head and mustered up any courage I had left. I cautiously opened the door, peering down the hall. Everything was in order, furniture in its spot. The only thing different was a small layer of smoke had formed from the stairs leading to upper level. I curiously moved through the door, standing in the center of my hallway. The smoke began to move, not quickly, but enough to notice the change. The speed slowly began to rise, smoke spinning in a small circle. I dropped the can and inched against the wall, feeling both curious and terrified at the same time. The smoke spun faster, papers ruffling unwillingly. I began to squint, straining to keep my eyes open. Finally the smoke stopped. I opened my eyes, believing it was over. Another crack and a dark form stood in front of me. Her red hair tumbled over her shoulders, stopping abruptly around her cleavage. The girl’s eyes twinkled under the poorly lit lighting. Her glare sent waves of terror down my spine. If she hadn’t been looking at me like a predator and appeared out of thin air, she would have been kind of cute. She looked at me and smirked, looking as though I had just said that aloud. I didn’t say that out loud…did I? Finally she took a quick step towards me, and I jumped. Without hesitation, she grabbed my arm and pulled my face close to hers. She mouthed the words, only I couldn’t read. I couldn’t breathe or think. I stared into her eyes, which were gray. The top of her eyes started dark gray, but as you moved down, they faded into white. The girl slammed me into the wall, bringing me back into reality. I flinched as she spoke, "This is your warning. Do not meddle into something that you have no business meddling in. The consequences are fatal. I can’t protect you from your curiosity." I gasped as her eyes flickered to black, her stare threatening. She dropped me onto the carpet, bending down with me. She gently placed a kiss on my cheek, and held up my wrist. She rolled my sleeve up, exposing my bare wrist. With her other hand, the girl placed one nail on my wrist. She stared down at it, as if battling with herself. Finally she dug her nail into my skin. I yelled out, trying to stop her from slicing me, then she shot a look at me. My heart stopped, her cold glare paralyzing me. Her eyes faded to black again, and I tried to swing. I couldn’t move my body. My eyes flicked from left to right, suddenly terrified. I tried with all of my might to move, but she held my gaze. She finally looked down my wrist. I peered down and my eyes widened. She had carved a V into my arm, a line crossing through the middle. I began to shake, trying to act calm. She smiled again, and placed her lips against mine. Suddenly another loud crack and she was no longer there. I woke with a start, my heart pounding. I wiped my forehead, rubbing the sweat into my bed sheets. I shivered, making sure I was fully awake. I couldn’t believe what happened. It felt as if it had really happened. I questioned my sanity for a split second, then confirmed I was dreaming. I climbed out of bed, and sulked to the bathroom. Flicking on the lights, I turned on the water. I leaned down, and splashed cold water onto my face. Quickly I felt a sharp sting in my arm, and instinctively looked down. My heart pounded, fear bubbling in my throat. My wrist was bloody, and I quickly realized why. On my wrist was the carving the girl had given me from my dream. It was a dream…wasn’t it? © 2009 YoursTrulyAuthor's Note
