Evil Twin

Evil Twin

A Poem by Whiterose
"

This was so much fun to write. I took a class that analyzed detective fiction last semester and that's where many of the allusions came from.

"

I once considered you my evil twin
The Minister D to my Dupin
But when I think now I start to see
There is so much more to you and me
You were you far before we met

Though Moriarty must have lived before he and Holmes battled wit
My initial description was not entirely wrong
For our intellects match and our differences are strong

For your strength I am meek

And I might have more ability to turn the other cheek

You know when to speak and when to hold your tongue

While my emotions take my voice and run

My heart gets riled, I think its an argument

But you calmly state that a debate was all you meant

Your smirk meets my smile from across the table
Thinking now, our relationship defies my label

You are a much better Dupin with your personality
Your confidence and logic shadowing my uncertainty
Sometimes I think that you are the star

You are also a much better match to Holmes by far

Yet being beside you, my logical opposite

Makes me grow into a much better opponent

But maybe it isn’t a matter of dark against light

But a much more complicated battle of right versus right

If you’re Holmes than perhaps I’m Miss Adler

The woman who threw new lessons at the master

What was I thinking?  The opposites are of a different order

Your logic attempts to reason with my emotional disorder

While Holmes and Moriarty match wits on a logistical scale
Your cold logic versus my wild emotions is a match that never stales

So instead of being just the evil twin
We are so much more:  the detective and “the woman”

Together we challenge each other

I look at you as more than an honorary brother
The longer I look, the less our features seem the same

Our hair, skin, and glasses were initially to blame
Your dark eyes mask cunning
My light ones reveal all emotions running

But don’t get cocky my dear Holmes
It is still quite possible for you to be thrown

For as easy as I may seem to read

There are still a few tricks up my sleeve

Together our friendship helps us battle ennui
Even though no comparison fits us perfectly
