Chapter one.
The pinky sunset spread across the sky as Me, Spencer, Alex, Connor
and Olivia enjoyed the last day of the summer holidays. Spencer pulled
me aside before I could run into the calm waves. Spencer’s my boyfriend,
one year tomorrow.
“Daisy, I need to talk to you.” He said softly. He’s been acting strange for about 3 weeks now.
“Can’t it wait?” I replied looking towards Olivia, Alex and Connor splashing around.
“It’s sort of important. It will only take a few minutes.”
“ok fine, go on then.” I looked at Spencer as he began to explain.
“Well, you know when I asked you out last year, you said no?”
“Yeah..?” I replied slightly confused as to where this was going.
“I sort of got upset and she was there and-”
“Who was there? What did you do?” I cut him off.
“A
girl called Megan, and I asked her out. But then you came round my
house and said that you wanted to go out with me and I didn’t have the
heart to tell you that I was going out with Megan.”
“so, you’re telling me that you’re still going out with this Megan girl?”
“no of course not. As soon as you left I called Megan and explained. She understood perfectly fine.”
“Why didn’t you tell me this before?” I tried to stay calm but even I could hear the anger in my voice.
“I
didn’t want to hurt you. I thought if you never knew then it would be
ok but it’s been eating me up inside, you needed to know.” He held my
hand. “I love you.”
I pulled my hand out of his, picked up my bag and began to run home.
“Daisy, wait.” Spencer ran after me trying to stop me.
“No
Spencer! I won’t wait. You can’t do something like that then not tell
me till a year later and expect me to be ok with it! This isn’t the only
thing that’s happened in this relationship. I’ve had enough and I’m
going home. It’s alright for you though, you can just go and cry on
Jazzie‘s shoulder.” I spat out the words not even thinking about what I
was saying.
“What are you on about? Jazzie?”
“Everybody knows you two have been getting real close.”
“No we haven’t. I don’t know what you’re on about!” Olivia came running out of the sea and over to us.
“What’s wrong chick?” She asked me.
“Spencer can explain.” I left the beach and ran home.
*
I came crashing through the door, mum came into the hall way looking worried.
“What’s wrong? You’re home early.” she leant up against the living room doorway.
“Spencer, if he comes here don’t let him in.”
“Why,
what’s he--” before my mum could even finish I had already sprinted up
the stairs and flopped onto my bed. Why didn’t he just tell me as soon
as it happened. Then maybe I wouldn’t be so worked up about it. I heard
talking downstairs it sounded like a low manly voice, me and my mum
where the only people who lived here. Dad died 3 years ago, so when I
was 12. Soon after I heard the front door slam and then tapping on my
window shortly followed. I stood up, made my way over to the window and
opened the curtains. Spencer was stood on the ladder that was always
left outside the garden shed. I rolled my eyes and opened the window.
“Spencer what are you doing. I said all I had to say on the beach.”
“Please Daisy, Just give me a second chance.”
“No.” I slammed the window shut and closed the curtains. My phone rang, I picked it up to see who it was. ‘Connor.’ I answered.
“‘sup?” He asked.
“Spencer.” I said.
“what’s he done?” His voice got softer. Connor was always there for me, bless him.
“He kept something from me.”
“What? Daisy, just tell me.”
“He
asked me out and I said no, so he asked his friend Megan out. But then I
said I’d go out with him and instead of doing the right thing and
telling me straight he kept it from me.”
“so he cheated?”
“sort of, I suppose. I don’t know.”
“I’ll deck him, I will.” His voice filled with anger.
“Connor don’t be stupid!”
“He hurt you, I promised your dad that I would never let anyone hurt you and that I‘d take care of you.”
“That‘s
a promise you couldn‘t possibly keep, you can’t control if I get hurt
or not as much as you want to. Hurting Spencer isn’t going to make me
feel any better Connor, it will make me feel worse. It’ll make me feel
guilty and awful. Please.”
“Fine, but if it wasn’t for you then I
would.” He was so protective sometimes, a little too protective. He was
the only one of my male friends my dad liked, he made Connor promise to
protect me. I hung up the phone and curled up into a ball until I fell
asleep.
