The Patriot Soldier

The Patriot Soldier

A Poem by Viki Rachel
"

About a WWII veteran

"

Since Joe was young,

He had always known

What his duty would be when he was full grown.

As a young man,

He watched his big brother leave

To fight in a war that was overseas.

When the news came

That his brother had died,

Unforgiving determination flared in his eyes.

Mama refused,

And begged Joe to stay,

Though she knew he'd be gone the very next day.

His uniform was mint,

When he first arrived

Back in 1945.

In foreign land,

He met two new friends

Who went by the names of Geoffery and Ben.

Geoffery had a child

And Ben a wife,

And both were quite cautious to keep their life.

And though Joe was brave,

He covered his nose

When the putrid stench of death rose.

Joe was forced to look away

At the mass of bodies, rotten.

Though he knew it was a sight he could not have forgotten.

And for the bodies in the camp,

And the memory of his brother,

He began to fight with fury, and motivation like no other.

But before he was halfway done,

He felt fire in his chest,

And the fury in his heart slowly lost its zest.

It only took on minute,

One minute on that street,

To silence the thump of the patriot's heartbeat.
