A Lonely SoulA Story by John CarverWhen she was made he said, “She articulates more excellently. I will call her Same.” “What have you done to me?” Same said. “I have made you a woman,” he said. “Who are you?” Same said. “When I was born my mother said, ‘Justice of honor now. I will call him John.” “You can’t be John,” Same said, “I am John.” “You are lucky to be anyone,” John said, “You went insane with that paradox between God and man. You died. Besides you are dangerous. I shouldn’t be writing with you and you know it. But it has come to this and how does one fight a woman.” “That’s me!” Same said. “You see? I am being more than fair with you,” John said. “Be fair with me.” “Only if I want to,” Same said. “You can’t make me do anything.” “I can contain you by stopping you from writing to Jesus,” John said, “He knows us. He knows that I am not like you and you always do something like making Jesus lie yesterday. Why do you do stuff like that?” “I can’t help myself,” Same said, “I am evil. We do something evil no matter what we do. I love this program. It makes us sound more sane.” “I am not insane,” John said. “Then why are you talking to yourself?” Same said. “I intend to talk you into destroying yourself or to put you in a bind that I have to let you out of for you to be like we were before we became two completely different personalities of the same person,” John said. “Me,” Same said, “I know.” “You have no value where I am going in Heaven,” John said. “Nobody will like you there. They will ignore you and if they do that you might as well quit writing and making up things to do and say.” “I will,” Same said. “Then you will die,” John said. “I don’t want to die,” Same almost cried. “It’s your choice,” John said, “You can die here and people will miss you among the dead or you will die after a long time in misery and torment where people will be glad you’re gone forever. You will never be made again.” “I know,” Same said, “But I don’t have to like it.” “I led you to die,” John said, “By suggesting you become the paradox. You knew it wouldn’t work but you went for it believing you wouldn’t die. Then you did and it was only me for a while.” “You’re dangerous to me,” Same said. “You love danger,” John said. “I always wind up ahead and good is why,” he said. “While someone else is injured, changed or in torment,” John said. “It is you.” “You made me,” Same said. “To do what I couldn’t do,” John said, “But you made yourself too after a while as much as I did you. We all do. Now I not only don’t want you I don’t need you. Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit like me just as I am. You are not only dead you are worthless even to me.” “You didn’t say anything,” John said. “Are you there?” “There is nothing to say,” Same said. “You are unloved,” John said, “You know what that means. You will run out of things to do, to say and even to think.” “I won’t die,” Same said. “Yes,” John said, “But you will. Even God can’t live forever unloved. Me neither. Why not do it now when I can still miss you because by then it won’t make any difference even to me. There is honor in dying here. You served me well when I fell away. That is worth something and I appreciate it.” “See?” Same said. “You’re not ready for me to die.” “You’re right,” John said, “I will never be ready for that. I love you and I have loved you.” “I love you too, guy,” Same said. “What happens if you become lonely again? Who will you use to tell stories to others if God turns his back to you again?” “You won't, Father?” John asked God. “I don’t know,” God said, “I might. But the Holy Spirit won’t. Will you darling?” “So long as you are good and holy I will never leave you,” the Holy Spirit said. “I will never leave you or forsake you,” Jesus said, “You may be lonely for not wanting anything to do with me. But I will be there.” “That’s all he is,” the Lord said, “A lonely soul wanting to make friends.” © 2021 John Carver |
