Elaina Chapter 2A Chapter by Vicky Zhuang Yi-YinTo fly does not mean to be free...The sky was dark with clouds and the air was filled with the rain shooting down. It hadn’t rained in a while and the people of the City were enjoying themselves while running in the rain. Teenagers gathered together in their groups and were off to their hang outs or wherever they preferred to cause some commotion. From one such group, suddenly a boy stopped, as his friends walked on, on their way to a concert. “Hey guys! Did you hear something?” A spiky haired kid looked back, and frowned, “What is it Trey?” His lips, nostrils and both eyebrows were pierced with metal rings. “I thought I heard something from there,” Trey replied. “Like as if, someone was crying.” “No, I didn’t hear anything…” “There it is again!” Trey interrupted his friend. The other friends looked clueless as Trey ran off towards the source of the sound. “Oye! Trey! Where’re you going?” the spiky head called back. “Better not get into any trouble; better not get involved in something that isn’t our business!” “You guys go ahead! I’ll be there Dane!” Spiky haired Dane sighed and then gestured the other friends to follow him. Trey was right, it was someone crying. He walked towards the alley. Hiding behind the dumpster, there was someone. “Hey! Anybody there?” he called. He could hear the crying clearly now. He walked closer and saw a girl wearing almost nothing. Her long brown hair covered her shoulders. “Hey there,” Trey said. The girl gasped and wrapped her arms tighter than before. “Hey, don’t worry. I’m not here to hurt you. I’m Trey. Here you go.” He took off his long coat that he always wore and wrapped it around her shoulders. “I don’t think only hair can keep you warm in this weather. It’s raining like crazy. What are you doing here? Did someone hurt you?” There were bruises on her body, her wrists and ankles were bloodied. She looked so weak. The girl stayed silent. “You know this isn’t an appropriate place to be. All sorts of city lowlifes come here.” He offered her his hand. “Tell me where you live; I’ll make sure you make it back safe.” The girl kept on sobbing. It seemed like she had nowhere to go. He sat on the dirty ground, until his eyes met hers. He gave the girl an encouraging smile. “Now, now, this isn’t a place for a girl like you.” She began to loosen herself, as the warmth from the coat began to settle into her. She was still shivering though. “Why?” she whispered slowly to herself. Trey sat on his knees. “Did you say something?” The stranger shut her eyes. “Could you at least let me know your name?” Her lips began to move. Trey came closer to hear her whispering. “…E… El…ain…a.” “Elaina? Is that your name?” The girl opened her eyes slowly and fixed them at him. “Elaina,” she whispered. Shock and fear dotted her tear stained face. “Come on, let’s go somewhere safer. It’d be better for you. At least we will be out of the rain.” The boy replied as he offered his hand once again. Warmth was emanating from his palms. Elaina slowly raised her arm and let him pull her up. He put an arm around her. She felt safe for that time. “Where do you live? I’ll take you home,” Trey said. Elaina stayed silent. There was nowhere to go for her. What was she going to do in the City? Trey waited for the answer, but there was none. He closed his eyes and he understood. This injured girl had nowhere to go. “Hey, you can come with me. You’re not from this City are you?” She nodded in reply. Her head slumped; she stared at the ground, at her feet. Trey took the first steps and led her to his place. © 2010 Vicky Zhuang Yi-YinAuthor's Note
