A Hopeless Chase

A Hopeless Chase

A Poem by Lindon Slater

In my view I saw a light
Wondrously this light allowed me to follow it
As I possessed for it a great admiration

For what seemed like an eternity
I ran towards this light
endlessly endeavoring to reach it
so that I might touch upon its great warmth

Forgetting all beings in my surrounding
I never reverted from this obscure light
and in this following there was fear
fear that the light may go out

Soon enough I had almost caught up
I was so close to this light
so close that it nearly blinded me
I turned away for a short time
In this time I regained sight
to turn back watching as my light shattered

Fracturing into small fragments
I could do nothing but watch
wishing as though I never reverted my eyes

When I found that the light had gone from my sight
I wondered in that brief moment
was it not I who was the light to always shatter?
