The Awakening

The Awakening

A Chapter by MythicalJack

Hi, I’m Jason and this is my story of how I went from your ordinary British eighteen-year-old living in Brighton to a hero with the help of some amazing people along the way.

My story starts on the morning of my eighteenth birthday, I woke up around eight with the sun shining brightly through my dark sea blue curtains.

Like any eighteen-year-old I laid there with the duvet wrapped around my head wondering if I really needed to get up. Little did I know I wouldn’t be returning to my bed that night.

Just as I had decided to sit up my family barged in screaming “Happy Birthday!!” I look up and spot my younger sister Emily first who was a short red head 16-year-old who made the same joke every year “Look! Look! His going grey already!” My Mum laughed and pulled a small black box with a light blue ribbon tied around it “Happy Birthday Jason, your eighteen now finally a man”

I couldn’t help but smile, we might not have had everything growing up, but I was always grateful of my mum for giving me and Emily the best life she could on her own.

Emily “Open it already Dummy I need to get ready” “alright alright”

I slowly pulled the ribbon releasing it. The ribbon fell slowly as it hit the sheets they seemed to become whiter and almost smelled like a fresh sea breeze.

I gently placed my hand onto the closed box, as my finger touched the lid I felt a sudden rush of energy fill my body. I didn’t know it then, but this was the first time I connected with my powers, but it certainly wasn’t the last.

I took a deep breath and carefully removed the lid I looked down and saw a simple but elegant watch with a dark leather strap connecting to bright silver watch face with roman numerals where the numbers normally were.

I quickly looked up at my mum who had begun to cry “It was your fathers, I know he would have wanted you to have it if he was still here”. I stood up and hugged her “It’s perfect thank you” mum “Sorry I didn’t think it would make me so emotional, I’m going to go make breakfast you two get ready and come down stairs okay?”

Once they had left my room I sat there holding the watch in my hand, what was that energy I felt? It couldn’t have been real no one else noticed it am I going crazy? No there must have been something else it’s just a watch.

After about 10 minutes I decided to get ready, I slipped into my favourite pair of blue jeans grabbed the nearest t-shirt and quickly slipped the watch onto my hand. I walked over to the mirror to sort my hair. Now I wasn’t really anything special a normal size and average height with short light brown hair and light blues eyes.

Yet something today seemed different, everything was so much better my hair wasn’t messy at all my smile perfectly straight with bright white teeth. The sun was shining so much brighter than usual as if it already knew something big was coming but what?

Just before I left the room I realised I had forgotten to open the curtains, I rushed across the room to open my curtains and when I looked out I was shocked to see the waves so powerful as if a storm was coming but we were supposed to have clear weather I was sure of it?

I rushed downstairs to join my mum and Emily for breakfast, by this point Emily was to busy updating her Facebook to even notice me, but as my mum turned her eyes met mine and she froze for a second, she nervously muttered “Gosh you look more like him everyday”

We ate breakfast quickly as mum had to leave for work and Emily was late for school already so there wasn’t much talking, which didn’t bother me much because I couldn’t get the image of those waves crashing against the shores out of my head and I couldn’t work out why it worried my mum so much that I looked like my father.

I couldn’t think about it anymore I had to get a closer look at those waves I don’t know why I just felt drawn to them it was like they were trying to reach me, and I wanted to find out why.

I grabbed my black jacket slipped my shoes on and ran outside, it was freezing you could see every breath you took, but that wasn’t going to stop me I had to get to the beach it was pulling me in and I had to know why!

I ran to the quietest part of the beach which was about one and a half miles from where I lived so normally running this I would be left out of breath. I mean I wasn’t the most athletic person in the world, but this time was different I got there still full of life and energy not even out of breath in the slightest.

I looked across the rocky beach front and for a moment just admired the beautiful view, the sun shining down bright on the watery pebbles reflecting a stunning sparkle back into the world and for a second everything was perfect. That all changed when these huge dark waves began crashing onto the beach again shaking the very ground I stood on.

Now any sane person would have turned away at that moment and normally I would have done to but something inside me started pulling me even closer the ground shaking harder with every step forward I took as if every step I took forward caused a mini earthquake beneath my very feet.

It wasn’t long till I had reached the edge of the water the waves were moving faster than I had ever seen they almost looked excited to see me. Then everything went dark the clouds blocked the sun completely not even a slightest glimpse of it could be seen, the waves stopped the water stood still! That’s right the waves just stopped!

An eerie fog formed around me I couldn’t see anything I started to panic my heart was racing what was happening I shouldn’t have come here! I turned to run but the water grabbed my legs I couldn’t move, what was happening to me?

Someone grabbed my arm quickly tapped the button on my  watch and screamed “I’m sorry son, but we need your help!” There was a bright flash of white light accompanied by an ear shattering bang.

I opened my eyes I was laying in a puddle covered in mud. I felt exhausted I could barely move, I used all my force to push myself onto my back as I took a sharp breath and began to slowly look around. All I could see was these beautiful bright green oak trees which blocked the sun out in most places.

I turned my head to one side and it shocked me to my core running towards me was these skeleton like creatures their bones crunching against each other as they ran towards me with what appeared to be wooden sticks no bigger than one meter, shattering their teeth as their heads bounced with every footstep.

I tried to get up, but I had no strength left my eyes began to close and just when I thought it was all over my eyes straining to see the slightest glimpse as they charged towards me was this the end?

The skeletons were almost upon me I could smell this horrible stench of rotten flesh as they got closer and closer. Suddenly there was a loud crash of thunder and a bolt of lightning struck the ground, a large man leaped over my exhausted body and swung a huge two headed battle axe crushing the skeletons where they stood.

I wish I could tell you what happened next, but I must have blacked out again because I don’t remember anything after that swing.

I slowly awoke to a powerful burning smell, I took a short look around to find a fire burning but the flames where purple?! what was this magic I thought to myself. Just as I tried to get up I heard a voice from behind me.

“woah easy there you’ve been out for hours I thought you was a goner when those skeleton minions attacked” It hurt to talk my throat was dry “W.. Wh… Who are you?”

“Me? I’m Shah son of Odin and your welcome for me saving your life, now what the hell are you doing in the Daemonica forest?”

“The what forest?... Where am I?! How did I get here?”

“Don’t worry about that for now just rest okay I’m going to take you to see someone he will be able to help you just trust me okay get some rest”

I wanted to argue back I had so many questions to ask but my body just wouldn’t let me, so I laid there quietly listening and waiting. What the hell where those things, how did I get here? What’s coming next?

As the night went on Shah gave me some strange meat stew which was questionable at best with little bugs floating in it. but I had no choice to eat it I needed my strength back if I wanted to answer all my questions and my god was I determined to find out what was going on.
