Pain

Pain

A Poem by WisdomGarden120

PAIN

If you were given the choice between physical or emotional pain,
which would you choose?
Physical pain is bearable, but an emotional wound I would never wish upon my worst enemy.
With physical pain, you can see the wound.
You can see where your skin is split or your bone is broken.
You can bandage it,
wrap it,
apply medicine,
and watch as over time it closes and heals.
The pain fading leaving only a scar as a reminder of the endeavor.
With emotional, there is no explanation for the sharp needle piercing your heart into your very being.
There's no malady in medicine books that explains why your very soul is crying out,
why your chest becomes heavy with a burden on your heart that makes you want to simply curl up and die.
There is no band-aid you can put on it,
no splint you can bind it with,
no ointment to lessen the sting.
It does not heal,
no scar is left,
and the pain never fades.
It is simply repressed until a reminder shoves the needle right back into your heart and twists it.
Seeing the face of a past lover,
a landmark of a terrible event in your life,
the tombstone of a lost one,
Things that used to be the best events in your life have now turned into nothing but a cruel joke pushing the knife ever deeper into your soul.
A pain that is manifested in your mind like self-inflicted torture beyond your control.

Choose carefully.

I go with physical, for sure, emotional pain is much deeper pain that continues to feed itself, much harder to ignore.
