The Koto

The Koto

A Story by Avery Valentine
"

Completely made up!!!!

"
The young girl bathed in rain sits under the moonlight of the full moon with her koto in front of her as she kneels before it and begins to play the forbidden song.
A song that has no name, for it has been declared forbidden and sinful.
the young girl continues to play her instrument as she touches the instrument lightly at first before her fingers begin to strike the strings in a more violent manner.
her creamy light brown skin shines under the moonlight as she looks down at the strings with a desperate expression.

The man who found her and fell in love with her walks towards the place where she is striking her instrument and stops talking to the maid as he stands below her and listens. The maid gasps as she drops her towels on the floor and freezes completely as she looks up at the young girl who just continues to strike her instrument. the man stares at her as she plays her instrument and freezes as he listens to her instrument sing.

the song gives him a frustrated feeling as he begins to realize that although the way her hands moves is truly beautiful, the instrument seems to be crying. the song itself is a beautiful melody and it would definitely be calming and reassuring if it were being played in a more calm manner. But the girl plays it in a very violent way, making it seem like if the instrument is crying as if she were crying.

"The garden here is quite beautiful." Mr. Tanaka says as he smiles at Mr. Iskvar.
"oh no, I'm sure Japan is more delightful during this season." Mr. Iskvar says as he jumps in surprise when he begins to hear the crying of an instrument almost besides him.
he turns to look at the person playing and to his surprise, it's the young lady that his son had brought over from another country in order for her to live and work for his family.
He had noticed that his son had fallen head over heels for this young girl but didn't quite understand why until now.
there was something beautiful about the way she looked under the moon as she played her instrument. although she had piercings and a tattoo in her right arm at this moment none of that mattered. she seemed unreachable. Like if she was preparing herself to fly away into another universe, a place that no matter how much he paid he wouldn't be allowed to even see.

"that song is forbidden in my country." Mr. Tanka says as he stares at the young girl with curious eyes. 'why would someone as beautiful as her want to die?'

"oh, I'm sorry. I'll get her to stop playing it immediately." Mr.Iskvar says as he looks at the girl but is slowly pulled back by Mr. Tanaka.

"no, leave her. I must admit that she has found a perfect day to play it so she must not be disturbed." Mr. Tanaka says as he observes the girl's hand move in a violent way. "that song comes with a meaning." Mr. Tanaka says as he observes the young girl in front of him. He can see that she is now moving her own body according to the song itself, almost as if the tune were to be taking over her body.

"Long ago the moon kingdom found a child lost in the wild and took him in. He ended up growing up there and viewed those people as his family but it finally hit him one day when he realized that he couldn't compete to become the princess's husband. He couldn't compete because he was a man with the blood of the Sun Kingdom and the royal family could not accept marrying outside of their own blood. although he was the strongest man in the kingdom at the end, it all came down to the fact that he didn't belong. So one day after a rainy day, once the moon came out the man took out his Koto and began to sing his song to the moon. there is a version of the story that says that at the end of the song the moon listened to his wish and turned him into a star so that he would be born as part of the moon clan in his next life and that way he would be able to be with the princess. the woman he loved."

"then why is it forbidden?" Mr. Iskvar asks as he looks at Mr. Tanaka with a confused expression.

"because in the original story his wish was different. that young man didn't wish for love, He wished that he would die. the moon didn't listen to his plea though, because the moon didn't care. after all the time he spent loving the moon; at the end the moon could never accept a b*****d child. so he lived the rest of his life, unable to think about ever dying, because he thought he didn't deserve for his number one wish to come true. in order words it's a suicide song."

Mr. Iskvar watches as the young girl begins to play her instrument more violently to the point where he could swear that he could see the tips of her fingers drawing blood.
he stands there shocked as her tears fall slowly as she turns to look at the moon and he hears Mr. Tanaka gasp.

"I don't understand, how could someone so beautiful want to-" Mr. Tanaka's words are interrupted as both men watch as the girl is quickly pulled away from the instrument and into the arms of Iskvar's son. The girl stares at the man with eyes wide open as she tries to say something but is violently kissed by him.

the young man could no longer watch as his favorite flower strung her instrument with a painful amount of pressure and speed. He had wanted to give her space, to get used to her new life here before making her his but she had given him no other choice. as she played her instrument it looked like she would fly away at any moment. away from his reach and that was something he would not let happen.

so he pulled her away from the instrument and kissed her as he hugged her tightly.
"please don't play like that." he says to her as the both fall to their knees. "you looked like if you wanted to fly away so I couldn't let you get away from me."

the young girl looks at him shyly as she touches her lips lightly. "is it alright for me to think of this place as my home?"

the young man smiles as he touches her cheek lightly. "if you can't accept a place to be your home, at least try to think of me as home."

the young girl begins to tear up as she holds his hand gently and slowly inches closer to him in order to embrace him.

Mr. Iskvar and Mr. Tanaka walk away slowly as Mr. Tanaka smiles with his teeth completely showing. "What a coincidence," he says as Mr. Iskvar looks at him confused.

"what?" Mr. Iskvar asks as he looks at Mr. Tanaka who is currently smiling widely.

"nothing." Mr. Tanaka Says as he smiles while looking at the full moon.

what Mr. Tanaka kept to himself as a secret was that although, at the end of the story the young man was not granted his wish. By pure coincidence, a young maiden who had been passing by had heard the cries of his instrument and she interrupted him before he could end his song to ask him if he was alright.
At the end although the moon didn't care much for the young man, the moon still blessed his family and bloodline. because the young maiden who had found him that day crying in solitude was by pure coincidence the moon's favorite child. and the moon would never abandon its favorite child and her loving husband.
