Ode to a Cat

Well, it's an ode to my cat.

Memories of a feline vivid

My shin, with velvet fur he frays

His valiant hisses with anger livid

Morph into veily merry displays

His pupil, dark as the moonlit ocean

Circumscribed by an iris golden

Reads my every grief and notion

And ferries me to wistful days of olden

As I contemplate a quarrel

Or a gut-wrenching game with friends

My tiny four-legged, white-socked Sorrel

Cobbles the path to a blissful end

When screams have overtaken words

And reason drowns in futility

My fowl-breathed Anubis girds

And saves us from naivety

Whence he came to my abode

Only the humble Gods can tell

Thus hath been writ this humble ode

To a humble cat who keeps me well

LOVE IT!!!!! This is a superb poem; the story told, the word pictures, and all painted with perfect rhyme, rhythm and tempo, makes it a delight to read!!! Your imagery- "His pupil, dark as the moonlit ocean
Circumscribed by an iris golden " is awesome; and the word play on "fowl breathed" is great. Admittedly, as I have two big dogs and nine cats, I do believe in some mystical power imbued within the feline species, and when I have labored with serious health issues, some of the cats come and lay upon me to "help me" get through. Anyway, great work! Keep it up.

Thanks, Julian. 9 cats and 2 dogs huh! That's incredible, and I must say I envy you. The poem I wrote stemmed from a deep sorrow about the loss of my cat many years ago, and somehow grew into something optimistic and humorous almost. Anyways, I must agree that one of the few things getting me through this life is my cat, and I'm glad you liked my poem!

This is such a cute poem about your cat. The words have an elegant flow to them, with the poetry being vivid in itself. You've really done a wonderful job with this. Also, Anubis is an adorable name for a cat. Well done, and keep on writing :)
