Understanding

Understanding

A Poem by Yari Garcia (Older Profile)

Understanding

I wanted to tell her she isn't missing anything.
She looked at my bare flat belly
as she handed me the delivered food.
I could feel her thoughts
all the pain that comes with
being her.
I knew what it was like
to look in the mirror and see her
--and be cruel...
--and scrutinize...
then think of the reactions in her memory
from every single boy
(and the glares from some of the girls).
As she walked away
I wanted to yell at her
that being me sucks just as much.

Author's Note

Yari Garcia (Older Profile)
I wrote this poem when I was 20 years old. I was living on my own, struggling with bills. I was also struggling with a past of bullying in high school and a past of bullying at home. I didn't have very good self-esteem.

I ordered food one lazy day. I was feeling despondent and alone, and the girl who delivered my food was in no doubt a crappy mood too. She was heavier, and at the time I was very thin. She gave me a look that inspired this poem.

I'm in no way fat-shaming. This poem is to point out that, no matter what you look like, you can still struggle with self-esteem due to bullying. We should all be a little nicer to each other, and never quick to judge.

Thank you so much for reading!

Well the subject matter was awesome and also I would like to say a relatable topic because everyone goes through a period in time where they do not feel good about themselves or has been bullied. There's many forms of bullying other than physical. Manipulation is one of those type I was bullied emotional and mentally and here's and interesting fact people can bully themselves. Self bullying is looked over simply because it's not as extreme but who's to say. Everybody has a monster that they are afraid of so this poem is deep or maybe it just my deep thinking. I don't really know I have a hard time seeing stuff as it I always have to find a deeper more complex meaning when the answer is so simply lol. Enjoyable reading though.

I agree with you, Gracia. It does not matter how we look like, We can be inspired from anyone's look. Some time when we meet children we get such inspiration which motivated us to write something. well done.

Amazing message and great poem. I really enjoyed reading this. It is a shame that the world is the way it is.

We are all perfect and imperfect in our own unique ways,,, unfortunately many mock what they don't understand, or project their own insecurities onto others.
