Kings and Queens, and Knights in Shining Armor

Kings and Queens, and Knights in Shining Armor

A Poem by Yana Myles
"

Remember the fairy tales we used to read back when we were children (I still read them cause I'm childish like that :P) well, this poem looks at the 'villains' of those stories.

"

There are many stories,

Of which they tell,

Of kingdoms far away.

Of princess gowns,

Of bejeweled crowns,

Of dreams that last for days.

They spin and weave,

Such joyful tales,

That make little girls smile and dream.

Of a talking mouse,

Of a candy house,

Of cakes all piled with cream.

Of all the stories that they tell,

A few things stay the same,

For these simple things are things that make the best of a fairytale.

Of evil step-mothers,

Of significant others,

Of the plans they attempt and fail.

Of Kings,

Of Queens,

And maybe even,

Of a gigantic hungry whale.

But in every story,

That we tell,

There must be a damsel in distress,

For a knight in shining armor,

Must come and make a mess.

But does anyone ever wonder,

What happens to the ones,

That they leave behind,

For a fairy tale isn't a fairy tale,

Without a dragon or a crime.

Kidnap the princess,

Burn down the town,

Eat the men trying to impress,

For everyone knows,

That this is what those dragons do the best.

But maybe the dragon was lonely,

Maybe the witch was sad,

Maybe the monster was longing,

For the friend it never had.

Maybe the giant was mourning,

For its pet that past away,

Maybe the little man was mocking,

Because he had no other way.

Maybe the ghost was wailing,

Because its family was too,

Maybe the wolf was howling,

Because it had nothing else to do.

Maybe the ones we call the worst,

Are really the best in disguise,

Maybe the the ones we beat and curse,

Are really the ones most wise.

Maybe they've had a year or two,

That made it way too many,

The things they've seen,

The places they've been,

Have replaced what once was sunny.

Maybe we say they're bad,

Because they're slightly scary,

Maybe we say they're terrible,

Because they're big and hairy.

Maybe the ones we say are bad,

Just went through the worst of things,

Maybe they're sick, or lonely, or scared,

And just want some company.

Who are we to stare and judge,

At those we don't even know,

Who are we to point and nudge,

When did we start to stoop that low.

Maybe we should invite the witch over for pancakes,

Or the little man over for game of riddles

Maybe we should ask the giant if he likes parakeets?

Or the dragon to play monkey in the middle.

Maybe the ghost just wants to play,

And what's the harm in that?

Maybe the monster wants a day,

To play dress up in a big top hat.

Maybe we just judged them too soon,

Maybe the kings and queens did too.

Maybe the princess wanted to go,

Maybe the knight did too.

Maybe we all just didn't think,

We could all be friends,

But now that we're on this topic,

Maybe we could make amends.

But the questions in this moment,

That we should all know and see,

It's very very important,

(Even the monster thinks it be)

The dragon, the witch, and the ghost, all really want to know,

Would you like some sugar in your tea,

Maybe? Yes? Or no?

As soon as I started reading this I was taken back to my childhood and to all the stories I was told. Although it started off quite light hearted and fun by the end it gave me pause to stop and think about perspective. It is imaginative and creative with a side of seriousness and I enjoyed reading it.
